Make wellness education mandatory Sen Michelmore

Shadow Health Minister Kathy Michelmore yesterday warned alarming obesity statistics could be about to get even worse as she urged Government to expand a new schools wellness programme.Junior Health Minister Cromwell Shakir had said about 14 students at Victor Scott School meet twice a week during their lunch break as part of a Healthy Wealthy initiative encouraging healthy eating and improving self-esteem and exercise habits. But Senator Michelmore said more needs to be done to counter recent data showing 19 percent of children are obese, which she described as a travesty. She told the Senate during the Motion to Adjourn: “If one in every five young people has problems with being overweight, 14 children is obviously a start, but we need to be doing quite a bit more.“We need to make healthy national programmes absolutely mandatory and expand upon it.”Sen Michelmore, a physician, said anecdotal evidence in the medical field suggests the statistics are now getting even worse.“We need to implement strategies that require physical activities in our schools,” she said.Earlier, Senator Shakir had provided an update on the Department of Health’s Move More Bermuda campaign. In a Ministerial Statement, he said the programme has a key message to incorporate physical activity into a healthy lifestyle, requiring everybody to take part in physical activities they enjoy.Sen Shakir said Victor Scott’s Healthy Wealthy initiative is one such example, while Harbour Nights has included activities such as line dancing, resistance training and hopscotch. He gave suggestions on how people can increase their physical activity, such as using the stairs instead of the elevator and walking to a co-worker’s office instead of sending them an e-mail.
