Island ‘ahead of curve’ on female executives

Tracking success: Bermuda: RE+ILS now lists 95 influential women of Bermuda who work in insurance and reinsurance

A further 25 influential women in insurance and reinsurance in Bermuda have been identified in the latest edition of the trade magazine Bermuda: Re+ILS.

For the past three years the magazine has highlighted some of the most successful female executives working in Bermuda.

And the island can be proud of the high number and calibre of women executives it has in leading roles, according to the magazine.

It said: “In keeping with its long and rich history, Bermuda is once more showing the rest of the world the way forward. Whether it is new methods of risk transfer or simply breaking through those increasingly cracked glass ceilings, Bermuda is again ahead of the curve and looks set to remain there.

“Every year we identify a new list of top female executives to further demonstrate the depth of talent in Bermuda. This year is no different, with 25 new profiles showcased.”

The magazine noted that comparisons between Bermuda and other business hubs are “tricky to make, but Bermuda certainly seems to be home to a healthy number of senior empowered female executives”.

Among the women featured are Kathleen Barker, chief financial officer at Starstone Insurance, Sally-Anne Baron, chief financial officer at Trunomi, and Rachel Bardon who is the managing director at HSCM Bermuda.

In a profile article, Ms Bardon was asked what had been the biggest challenge she had encountered. She replied: “We need to be more innovative. Traditional reinsurance has ever-thinning margins with heavy competition in standard products.

“The industry has room for development in how we view risk and return, more efficient capital flow between investors and insurers, and improved distribution between insurers and insurers.”

The magazine started its list of influential women in insurance and reinsurance in 2015, when it featured 32. A further 28 were added last year, and with this year’s 25 the total now stands at 95.
