Appreciating the marvels of creation all around us

Nature’s wonder: the beauty of a cat’s markings (Adobe stock images)

There are moments in life that arrive quietly, without announcement, yet leave a lasting imprint on the heart.

I experienced one of those moments recently. Making me take note that signs could be in the smallest detail that cause us to reflect on the creation and the Creator. I'm reminded of the hymn: “All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small; all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.”

My journey of spontaneous reflection was sparked whilst I was resting on my sofa, the day began unhurried, with one of my cats — Tugboat — lying peacefully at my feet.

He’s named Tugboat because he’s chunky, strong, and powerful, much like our Bermuda tugboats that guide massive ships through our narrow channels with steady precision and control.

As I glanced down, my attention was drawn — not just to Tugboat himself — but to the detail of his fur. The patterns were striking. Each marking appeared intentional, precise, almost as though it had been carefully designed by hand. At the nape of his neck, I noticed what looked remarkably like a perfectly shaped love heart. Across his body, there was symmetry, balance, and beauty.

I paused. What I was looking at was not just a cat — it was a sign. Tugboat, in his quiet stillness, gave me insight into a powerful truth.

In that moment, a deeper awareness settled within me. This was only one small example of creation, yet it carried such intricacy and elegance. It stirred a profound sense of awe and reflection: how could something so detailed, so harmoniously arranged, be the product of mere chance?

“Allah is the One who created the heavens and the Earth.” (14:32)

How can one deny the Creator. There has to be a Creator and a magnificent One at that! Allahu akbar! (God is great!)

The Koran consistently calls mankind to reflect on the world around them — not in grand spectacles alone, but in the subtle, often overlooked details of everyday life. Allah says in His noble book: “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the Earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, are signs for those of understanding.” (3:190)

And further: “We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth.” (41:53)

These signs are not distant or abstract. They are present in what we see, what we touch, what we live among every day. They are in the vastness of the skies — and equally in the delicate pattern of an animal’s fur.

Such reflections lead to a conclusion that feels both natural and undeniable: there is a Creator. Not just any creator, but One who is deliberate, precise, and infinitely capable. A Creator whose work reflects not randomness, but purpose; not disorder, but design.

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty.” This beauty is not confined to what we define as aesthetically pleasing — it is woven into the very fabric of existence. What we perceive as beauty in creation is but a glimpse, a reflection of the Divine … and is not the Earth and all that is in it … beautiful?

Moments like these serve as gentle reminders; an epiphany, if you like — these moments call us back from distraction and heedlessness. They invite us to observe, to think, and ultimately, to recognise. And with recognition comes responsibility — a responsibility not to be taken lightly.

If the signs of the Creator are so evident — even in the smallest aspects of creation — then what excuse remains for neglecting Him? What justification can there be for turning away from worship, from obedience, from acknowledging His word?

The believing man says: “What reason have I not to worship the One who created me, and to Him you will all return?” (36:22)

The truth is not hidden. It is displayed, repeatedly, across creation — waiting for hearts that are willing to see.

That day, it was not a grand event that moved me. It was not a lecture or a debate. It was a quiet moment, a simple observation — and Tugboat, resting at my feet.

Yet within it, I witnessed something; something magnificent, something immense enough to remind me of the Magnificent Creator.

Allah says in His Noble Koran: “Indeed, in that are signs for a people who reflect.” (30:21)

The signs are not lacking — only our willingness to recognise them; and just as the tugboats of Bermuda guide great ships safely through the narrow channel, the smallest signs in creation are there to guide the human heart — if only we are willing to accept and follow.

So let us reflect and not be heedless to the obvious signs that surround us, signs that call us back to our Creator and lead us to success in this world and the next.

Indeed it is a sin to be heedless of the signs and times we are living in. Heedlessness is a kind of spiritual sleep. Awareness is a kind of light.

When we choose awareness — when we read the signs of our time with humility and sincerity — our hearts soften, our priorities realign, and our steps become more intentional. We begin to live with a sense of responsibility, gratitude, and readiness.

May we be among those who notice the signs, who reflect deeply, and who respond with faith, wisdom, and compassion. May our awareness become a form of worship, and our wakefulness a means of drawing closer to the One who never sleeps nor forgets; the One who says “Be” and it is. (2:117)

Be blessed Bermuda and may the Light of understanding and humility flourish within us.

Let us pray unceasingly for justice and peace in our homeland and throughout the world.

“O Allah, grant us light in our hearts, guidance in our minds, and insight to understand Your signs — and do not make us among the heedless.”

As salaam alaikum (peace be unto you).
