Bermuda’s Paul Rodrigues and Christian Ebbin will be keen to get back on to the water when the 29er European Championships resume in Sweden today.

The pair are among the 44 teams that have qualified for the gold fleet series that was scheduled to begin yesterday but was scrapped owing to the lack of breeze.

“Today should have been our first race day out of three in the finals in gold fleet,” helmsman Rodrigues told The Royal Gazette. “Unfortunately there was no racing as wind died out completely and has been postponed till tomorrow.

“Christian and I are looking forward to the next two days of racing as the weather forecast is looking more promising.”

The pair secured their spot in the gold fleet after placing 35th among the 173-strong fleet in the nine-race qualifying series, with three top-five finishes and a best showing of third in the penultimate race, competing in trying conditions.

“Last three days we have had very challenging weather conditions during our qualifiers,” Rodrigues added. “We took a well-deserved rest day today [Thursday].”

It is the second straight time that Rodrigues and Ebbin have qualified for the gold fleet at an international regatta having also done so at last month’s Typhoon UK 29er Class National and Open Championships in Weymouth, England, where they placed 31st among an overall fleet of 91 teams to secure their spot at the Youth World Championships in Brazil in December.
