Peter Bromby tied for lead at IOD World Championship
Peter Bromby got his bid for a fourth IOD World Championship title off to a good start in Marblehead, Massachusetts, on Sunday.
The four- times Bermuda Olympic sailor posted a 2, 4 record in the opening two races of the ten-race series to grab a share of the lead with rival skippers Peter Wickwire and Jonathan Farrar on six points.
Bromby is competing with crew Bill McNiven, Ron Stan, Rick Echard and Martin Siese.
Team tactician Siese is delighted to get their campaign off to a positive start.
“Very happy with results today,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“Little shaky off the start line but was able to get decent pace out of both boats that we had today.
“Once clear of the line we were able to make ground on most of the fleet, but could not quite reel in the guys with the best start.
“Quite a good breeze today and expecting some lighter stuff later in the week, normal conditions for Marblehead.”
Also representing Bermuda at the Championship is Kelsey Durham and crew Adam Barboza, Heath Foggo, Joanne Rogers and Michael Richold who produced a 4, 6 record to come ashore tied for third, four points off the lead pace.
“First race we were at the back of the fleet at the first mark, so we had five more legs to catch up and we made big gains to finish fourth,” Durham said.
“Second race we had a horrible start. We had to find some clear air and found it and rounded the first mark in fourth.
“But the last upwind leg we went to the wrong side of the course and lost two spots.”
Defending champion John Burnham got his title defence off to a poor start, posting a 10, 7 record on the day to earn a share of fifth, 11 points off the lead pace.
