Lewis strike sinks Bluebirds

MR Onions 1

Young Men's Social Club 0

A first half goal from Keston Lewis sent MR Onions through to the next round of the FA Cup at the expense of Young Men's Social Club.

Former PHC striker Lewis grabbed the winner with a sweet strike from just outside the box to take the honours for Onions in a temptestuous match at BAA Field yesterday.

Onions, who suffered their only defeat of the First Division season against the Bluebirds last weekend, had to withstand plenty of second half pressure as their opponents went in pursuit of a leveller.

Quincy Paynter headed a great chance over the crossbar from a inswinging corner kick, while Robert Rawlins let fly with a powerful shot which was well blocked by a sea of Onions defenders en route to goal.

The first round cup tie was physical affair throughout with both sets of players having to be separated by referee Robert Hudson midway through the second period when tempers threatened to boil over.

But in the end, it was Lewis' 19th minute effort which settled matters in favour of Onions who are among the early pacesetters in the First Division.

Lewis admitted it was pleasing to get revenge over YMSC who got the better of Onions during last weekend's league encounter.

"We're delighted with the win and it's good to get through to the next round," said the former Bermuda Hogges player. "It was a difficult game, a physical game, and it was nice to get a bit of revenge over them as they're the only team to have beaten us this season."

Lewis, who was a key member of PHC's 2007-9 treble winning team, said he was enjoying his football since stepping down to the second tier with Onions. The Trinidadian missed much of last season after injuring his ankle while playing for the Hogges but believes he is slowly rediscovering the form which made him one of the most dangerous players on the Island a few seasons ago.

"It's a different vibe playing for Onions than say PHC," he said.

"Although Onions are very organised as well and everyone has a professional attitude. I've been enjoying the season so far and it's been nice to get a few goals."
