Leaders Village enjoy comfortable win over Blazers

North Village's Tyrell Burgess bursts forward against Boulevard at Bernard Park yesterday. North Village won 3-0 to solidify their position to top of the Premier Division.

North Village 3Boulevard 0North Village took another step towards the Premier Division title with a comfortable victory over Boulevard at a windy Bernard Park yesterday. The league leaders, who remain three points clear at the top of the table, had to wait until the second half before taking the lead when Tyrell Burgess headed home a Ralph Bean cross. Then substitute Jason Lee added a second with his first touch of the game by steering a shot past Blazers goalkeeper Shejuan Swan from six yards out.Blazers rarely threatened the Village goal and Bean’s perseverance sealed the win when he scrambled the ball over the goal line late on.Village created several half chances during the first periodf with the wind on their backs but were largely frustrated by Boulevard’s backline which was forced to absorb plenty of pressure.Sammy DeGraff, the Village skipper, went close midway through the first half with a chip from just inside the box which looped over Swan’s goal and nestled on the roof of the net.The lively Randy Robinson then crashed a volley from the edge of the area which hammered against the underside of the bar before bouncing away to safety. The Village players appealed half-heartedly that Robinson’s effort had crossed the line but to no avail with referee Anthony Francis waving play on.Boulevard would have certainly been the happier of the two sides going into the interval having weathered the Village storm. But just a few minutes into the second half they found themselves a goal down when Bean delivered a cross from a short corner which was met by Burgess whose header sneaked past a leaden-footed Swan.Village looked less edgy in possession after taking the lead and started moving the ball around Bernard Park with pace and purpose. And it was no surprise when they doubled their lead through Jason Lee who had only been on the pitch for ten seconds. Once again it was a right wing cross from Bean which did the damage for Village with Lee diverting the ball into the net.Blazers were offering little going forward although they did give Village a scare when young striker Shenouda Outerbridge robbed Kofi Dill and attempted to lop a back-peddling Village keeper Jason Williams with the ball hitting the side-netting.That chance followed one for Village, when Vernon Tankard forced a save from Swan who moments later denied a point-blank shot from substitute Pierre Smith. With around ten minutes remaining Bean made sure of the Village win when he raced through on goal and bundled the ball past the onrushing Swan.North Village: J Williams, T Manders, S Fubler, K Dill, D Tankard (P Smith, 70), V Tankard, J Jennings (K Dill, 78), S DeGraff, R Robinson (J Lee, 75), R Bean, T Burgess.Substitutes not used: K Arruda, T Watson, J Sousa, A Lee.Goals: Burgess, 50, Lee, 76, Bean, 81.Boulevard: S Swan, T Walker, A Nelson, A Simmons, J Davis, A Foggo, S Outerbridge, R Wilson, J Crockwell, R Burgess, N Smith (D Butler, 87).Substitutes not used: A France, T Stovell, H.
