North Village midfielder Taurean Manders has turned professional with Canadian side Capital City FC after impressing during trials.The 24-year-old put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal earlier this week and is set to make his debut for the Canadian Soccer League expansion club against Toronto Croatia tomorrow.Manders, a Bermuda international, is one of four overseas players to sign for Capital City who are coached by ex-Everton assistant coach Shaun Harris.His father Andre Manders, a former Somerset Cup Match skipper, said his son was thrilled to be given the chance at the pro level. “He’s been having trials with the club for the past three weeks and they’ve handed him a contract,” he said. “He’s had trials in the past and this is the first time he’s been picked as one of the overseas players.”Andre said his son was disappointed he wouldn’t be able to represent Village in next year’s CFU Club Championships but knew the chance to turn pro was too good to turn down.The versatile player was an integral part of Village’s title winning team and previously played for Bradenton Academicals in the Premier Development League.“He’s a bit disappointed because it doesn’t look like he’ll be able to play for Village in the CFU Championships but you have to go for it if you’re offered pro terms,” said Andre.“It’s been a tough trial for him because he’s fitness wasn’t where it needed to be. He played three trials games and did well and they offered him a contract over the weekend.He added: “It’s the first time they’ve played professional football in Ottawa so he’s a little part of history too.”Capital City joined the CSL in March. They were founded by Neil Malhotra and will play at Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Mooney’s Bay Park.
