Sloppy Village do enough for victory

Tyrell Burgess scored the winner in a see-saw battle at Wellington Oval as North Village moved on to defend their Friendship Trophy crown after beating St David's at Wellington Oval yesterday. The champions advance to meet Somerset Trojans on New Year's Day at the National Sports Centre thanks to goals from Keishen Bean, a Dimitre Butterfield own goal and Burgess' fine finish. James Pace scored a brace for the Islanders.Bean, who has returned home for the festive period from his studies in Canada, praised St David's for making life difficult for the defending Premier Division champions.“It was a sloppy game in my opinion and that comes down to them not allowing us to play while trying to get their own game up and running, but a win is a win and we can move on to the final,” he said. The game started brightly for the East Enders who were ahead after only eight minutes when youngster Pace was left in enough space to fire a shot which beat Jason Williams in the Rams goal. The lead lasted 16 minutes, however, after a defensive mix up at the back allowed Bean to run in clean at goal, making no mistake from close range with his effort. That would prove to be the tale of St David's afternoon who, for all their hard work and determination, continued to make crucial mistakes in key areas of the pitch. The half time whistle was a blessing for them as Village laid siege to their goal, with ‘keeper Mikkail Crockwell thwarting a trio of attacks just before the interval.Pace was at the centre of attention on the day, particularly when he magnificently curled a free kick up and over the Village wall in the 60th that had Williams scrambling across his line in vain.St David's defence couldn't hold onto this lead either, with Dimitri Butterfield putting into his own net less than a minute after his side had taken their second lead of the day, although there was nothing he could do with the cross that was played in.With everything to play for and a place in the final at stake, it was left to a surprising match winner to step up and cement his side's spot at the ‘carpet'.Burgess collected a partially cleared ball just outside the St David's area and unleashed a piledriver towards goal that Crockwell had no chance of saving. That would be the final blow in the game, with the champions of both the Friendship and league now finding their feet after three consecutive losses to end the first half of the season.Village can move ahead of PHC with a win on New Year's Day by claiming their 11th Friendship title, while Trojans can join the two club on ten victories apiece and put ‘Silver City' back on the map in local football.“It was important to get a good run going in this competition, obviously you want to win it, but more importantly we had to gain some momentum heading into the second half of the season and we have gotten a head of steam up now,” added Bean.“We are in it to win and we feel that this is our cup and we want to win it again.“Our form heading into Christmas wasn't the best but this has allowed us to get some games under our belt in order to right our wrongs and get back on track, hopefully this goes a long way in defining our season.“It is about form in this sport but at the end of the day class is always permanent, you can find form and it can leave you but as long as you have the class in your ranks you can win at any moment, and that's how we feel.”North Village: J Williams, T Burgess, K Dill, D Tankard, L Alexander (D Grant, 80), V Tankard, J Boyles (S DeGraff, 55), L Dill, J Davis, K Bean, J Lee (R Bean, 62)Substitutes not used: D Grant, R Bean, K Dill, T JenningsGoals: K Bean, 18, D Butterfield (own goal) 61, T Burgess, 76St David's: M Crockwell, T Govia, D Butterfield, K Minors (A Crockwell, 66), J Pace, K Bean, A Lugo, T Webb-Caisey, OJ Pitcher (D Smith, 76), A Cannonier, F Crockwell (G O'Brien, 86)Substitutes not used: A Burchall, D Lambert, E RobinsonYellow card: K MinorsGoals: J Pace 8, 60Referee: A FrancisMan of the Match: J Davis (Village)
