Hogges trio help Darton College lift regional title

Darton College’s star man Troy Tucker

Darton State College in Georgia featuring a trio of Bermuda Hogges players have finished their regular season undefeated to reach the 12-team national tournament.Troy Tucker, Jamel Swan and Jaylon Bather helped Darton to the regional title with a 2-1 win over South Georgia College at the weekend.Wolves midfielder Tucker, who scored against South Georgia, was also named as the region’s most valuable player“It feels good,” Tucker said. “Undefeated season; won the region tournament; got the most valuable player. It feels real good.”“I saw the back of the net,” Tucker said. “I saw the back corner and said, ‘Yea, let me hit the back corner and I hit it.’ Then I had to go support our fans and give them respect for coming to support us.”Darton will most likely be the top seed of the 12 teams qualifying for the national tournament, held November 12-17 in Albany at Darton College, where they haven’t lost in almost two seasons.n Somewhat fittingly, Toronto FC finished their disappointing MLS season with a 2-1 defeat at Columbus Crew at the weekend.Toronto, whose line-up included Bermuda pair Reggie Lambe and Freddy Hall, fell behind after 16 minutes when Crew’s Frederico Higuain fired home the game’s opener.Paul Mariner’s side, who have gone a staggering 14 games without a victory, found an equaliser when Andrew Weiderman raced onto a flick on from Ryan Johnson before rounding goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum. The visitors had a chance to take the lead when Lambe struck a low drive that Gruenebaum did well to hold.Toronto conceded again, though, midway through the second half when Higuain converted from the penalty spot.“The difference between the two teams was the top end of the field, the final third,” Mariner said. “I thought we came back and responded extremely well in the first half … Once again it’s just all about quality.”“We had some nice football in the first half some glimpses of what we can do in the future,” Mariner said. “But again we’ve lost. It’s quiet as a mouse in the dressing room.”Lambe made 26 appearances for Toronto, scoring four goals, while Hall played 11 times between the sticks for the Canadian outfit.Toronto ended the season bottom of the Eastern Conference.
