Wells sets sights on winner’s medal

Nahki Wells (left) wants to make history by winning the League Cup.

Nahki Wells is so “hungry” for a Capital One Cup winner’s medal he can almost taste it.The Bantams striker said beating Swansea in Sunday’s cup final at Wembley Stadium would do wonders for the club and he has vowed to fight “grit and gut” to see his team to victory on English football’s biggest stage.“We are hungry for this opportunity and know what it can do to possibly excel our careers as individuals and as a club,” he told The Royal Gazette. “So I'm going to fight grit and gut to earn that winner's medal and will do whatever it takes to do it.”Swansea will enter the cup final as the overwhelming favourites. But this shouldn’t bother Phil Parkinson’s players in the least having also been the underdogs in upset wins against Premier trio Wigan, Arsenal and Aston Villa en route to the final.Wells is confident the Bantams can claim a fourth Premier scalp in the form of Swansea and lift a first major piece of silverware since City won the FA Cup over a century ago.“We didn’t come this far to get dumped out of the final and hand the trophy over to Swansea,” he said. “We want it just as bad as them if not more.”As confident as he may be, Wells is wary his team’s task is a daunting one against a club that’s seeking its first major cup title.“We know it’s not going to be easy and we might have to ride a bit of luck along the way as underdogs,” he said. “But I'm sure we have what it takes to win it.“We're going to have to be resilient and park the bus at times and play large amounts of the game without the ball and do the best we can when we do get the ball.”Whether City get the opportunity to tie their team ribbons on the trophy after all is said and done could hinge largely upon Wells’ goal scoring prowess should he play. The Bermudian is the Bantams leading goal scorer with 18 so far this term in all competitions.Wells is champing at the bit to play in Sunday’s cup final and become the first local footballer to score a goal at Wembley.“I'm confident I can score and will score if selected come Sunday,” he boldly declared. “That’s what I'm expected to do, that's what I'm paid to do and that's what I do best.“I thrive on pressure and like to have expectations and people believing in me because I believe in myself and feel I have what it takes to do the business against Swansea.“You thrive for these opportunities and play football for those reasons and I'm sure we will be up for it.”Are you going to watch Nahki at Wembley?
