Onions aim to lay down a marker

Gavon Thomason, the Flanagan’s Onions coach, believes his side can apply pressure to the leading pack with a win over St David’s at Goose Gosling Field tonight.

Onions sit fifth in the standings and victory could send them to 15 points and in third spot for at least 18 hours.

“Getting the win will be a massive plus,” Thomason said. “To go into the Christmas break on 15 points puts us in a good position to be able to really make our mark on the league in the new year.”

Among the scalps they have collected are PHC Zebras, Hamilton Parish, Dandy Town, the league leaders, and Southampton Rangers.

“Everything changes in this league with just a single victory or defeat, so we won’t get carried away and just concentrate on beating St David’s tomorrow,” Thomason added of the 9pm kick-off. “Only Cougars have beaten us at home this season, so we are looking to make Goose Gosling Field a fortress for us.

“If we can keep players fit, limit suspensions and with Keston [Lewis] in his current form, who knows what we’re capable of.”

While Onions will be playing the Islanders, Trojans also play tonight, welcoming Rangers to Somerset Cricket Club at 8pm.

The west end club can make further inroads after Cougars and Town played to a 3-3 stalemate last night, while Rangers will want to bounce back from last week’s disappointment away to Town.

PHC entertain Parish, with both sides looking to get away from the relegation zone. Parish, after a surprise win over North Village last week, will be looking to build on their momentum heading into the second half of the season.

Village host Wolves in the final match of the weekend.
