Lewis treble sinks Wolves

Hat-trick hero: Keston Lewis

Keston Lewis plundered a hat-trick as Flanagan’s Onions continued their strong second half of the season with a comfortable win over Wolves at a wet and windy Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night.

Lewis was in inspirational form for the home side who climbed to third in the table, taking advantage of the postponement of Devonshire Cougars’ match against North Village on Friday night.

The Trinidadian striker opened the scoring on 16 minutes when he chested the ball before turning and volleying past David Trott, the Wolves goalkeeper, who almost conceded again moments later when midfielder Nathan Peskett fired inches wide.

Onions were making light of the torrential rain and continued to dominate after the interval, doubling their advantage when Lewis scrambled home Pete Robey’s low, inswinging corner on 50 minutes.

Sam Butler and Peskett, again, went close to scoring for Onions who appeared far more determined and motivated than their opponents, and it was not until the introduction of John Barry Nusum, the former Bermuda captain, that Wolves showed any real appetite for the battle.

Despite the threatening attacking presence of Nusum, Onions grabbed another goal shortly after his introduction with Lewis turning provider with a square ball for Kevin Ronaldson, his strike partner, to tap home past Trott.

Nusum, who was beginning to cause the Onions defence problems with his physically and extra know-how, pulled a goal back with a close range finish on 66 minutes to give the visiting side a glimmer of hope.

Lewis, however, quashed put any ideas Wolves had of staging an unlikely comeback on 79 minutes when he converted from the spot kick after Gavin Thomason, the Onions substitute, had been pulled down by goalkeeper Trott.

Jonny Knight, who had moments earlier replaced Peskett, forced a fine save from Trott before Nusum scored his and Wolves’ second, powering his way through Onions’ backline and sliding the ball beyond Stephen Gould, the Onions goalkeeper.

Onions, who have only lost once in their last seven league games, restored their three-goal lead when Ronaldson scored his second to complete the rout on 85 minutes with a neat finish after good work by Thomason on the left wing.

Lewis said he was thrilled to have rediscovered his scoring touch and believed his side should have won by an even greater margin.

“It was difficult to play football and the conditions were tough out there but we stuck at it and got the result,” Lewis said.

“It’s been a while since I scored a hat-trick and I’ve been off the boil a little bit lately. “We’ve learned our lessons from last season and it’s nice to have won a couple of games back-to-back. We’ve definitely been more consistent this season than we were last season.

“Training has been really good and it’s bearing fruit on the pitch. Last season was our first in the Premier Division and it was a bit of a shock for us but this season we’ve been more prepared.

“We probably could have scored a few more tonight although we’re happy with the outcome.”

Onions will be looking for their third straight victory when they take on title contenders Dandy Town next weekend at Goose Gosling Field. Onions are two points behind Hornets in the table.
