Boulevard back to winning ways

Eagles scorer Kanhai Fray, centre

Boulevard returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win over promotion chasers Wolves yesterday.

Defeat at Police Field eliminated Wolves from the promotion race, and tempers boiled over with two Wolves players sent-off in an often fractious second half.

Things were going well for Wolves when they took the lead in the 44th minute through Sergio Richardson’s penalty. However, things went haywire for the visitors after the restart as they conceded two penalties in the space of a minute, had Richardson sent-off and later saw goalkeeper Jahhi Shakir second off for a second yellow card.

Boulevard were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute when top scorer Ian Coke was fouled. However, his spot-kick was weak and Shakir saved easily.

They got a second chance just a minute later when Tiaevince Douglas was fouled by Shakir and referee Garic Swainson pointed to the spot. Tempers flared as Richardson was sent off for kicking the ball away as Boulevard waited to take the kick, which Coke this time converted when he stroked his effort firmly to the goalkeeper’s right.

Wolves lost their composure after that as Coke had an effort tipped over the crossbar by Shakir.

Substitute Makai Young turned out to be the Boulevard hero, scoring two late goals to seal the win, tapping in a cross from the left in the 86th minute and then in the 90th minute when he found the net from distance after spotting the replacement goalkeeper out of position. Moments earlier Wolves went down to nine men when goalkeeper Shakir, already booked, took off his shirt and started walking towards the subs’ bench and was duly shown a second yellow card.

In total Swainson booked four Boulevard players and three from Wolves, as well as the two red cards for second yellow cards. The loss leaves Wolves in fifth place, nine points behind the second promotion spot with three games remaining.

Promotion chasing Devonshire Colts remained hot on the heels of Boulevard after beating Young Men’s Social Club 3-0 at Bernard Park.

Kian Butterfield, the Colts midfielder, gave the visitors the lead for good when he tapped in from a goalmouth scramble. Butterfield’s goal arrived five minutes after Giovanni Saltus, the Social Club defender, broke a leg in a tackle with an opponent.

Colts led 1-0 at the half and further extended the game beyond their hosts’ reach with two unanswered goals after the break.

Terry Foote, the Colts midfielder, scored in the 74th minute after thundering in a shot from the edge of the penalty box after Social Club failed to clear their lines.

Eli Smith, the Colts striker, rounded off the scoring in stoppage time when he fired in Lozendro Symonds’ pullback following some delightful link up play.

Somerset Eagles climbed back into third ahead of idle BAA, though they were made to work hard for their 4-3 victory at St David’s. Eagles got goals from Kanhai Fray, Rodre Wilson, Anwar Telford and an own goal from Chris Douglas as they led 2-1 at the half. Allan Douglas, Jamal Woodley and Jokai Fox replied for the home side.

A strike from striker Y-ron Astwood proved to be the difference in a hard fought encounter at Garrison Field where Paget beat X-Roads 1-0.

Astwood struck midway in the first half to earn the visiting Lions their third victory of the season. The striker latched on to a ball played into space, beat the last defender, cut back towards goal and fired past former teammate Tariq Smith, the X Roads goalkeeper, to earn the visitors a rare victory on the road.

X Roads had plenty of chances to come away with maximum points and might have felt hard done after all was said and done for not capitalising in the attacking third.

The hosts hit the woodwork and were unlucky to convert during several goalmouth scrambles either side of the half which Paget narrowly managed to survive.
