Junior football a hurricane casualty

Hoping for return: Lambe missed last weekend's win for Carlisle through illness

The Bermuda Football Association has cancelled all of tomorrow’s junior matches because of Hurricane Nicole.

The games have been moved to next weekend, with the BFA having already postponed the Player Development League match between Somerset Trojans and Robin Hood at Somerset Cricket Club on Wednesday, and yesterday’s match between Dandy Town and PHC Field at BFA Field. As it stands, Sunday’s FA Cup preliminary-round matches are still going ahead.

Southampton Rangers face a tricky tie against Butterfield & Vallis United, the only Corona League team to take up the BFA’s invitation to compete in the competition. Hamilton Parish meet Wolves in the opening match of a double-header at Wellington Oval and St George’s host Paget Lions.

X-Roads and St David’s will meet at Garrison Field in the other match, while Young Men’s Social Club and BAA have received byes into the first round on January 15.

Other events planned for the weekend, depending on the impact caused by Hurricane Nicole which hit the island yesterday are tomorrow’s Bermuda Olympic Association’s 80th anniversary celebrations at the Fairmont Southampton.

Special guest Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who won three Olympic Games gold medals in the long jump for the United States, is scheduled to arrive on the island today.

A youth sports clinic for about 100 youngsters, led by Joyner-Kersee, has been organised for the National Stadium tomorrow, while the evening’s anniversary gala events will include a black-tie banquet.

Should Joyner-Keree be unable to arrive on the island, the BOA will continue with the unveiling of the Wall of Fame, honouring the island’s Olympic athletes, at the National Sports Centre tomorrow. Another event tomorrow is the Bermuda Cricket Board award ceremony at Gosling’s Wine Cellar at 7pm.

• Reggie Lambe will hope to recover from an illness for Carlisle United’s home match against Hartlepool United tomorrow.

Lambe missed last weekend’s 3-0 win away to Morecambe last weekend and was not involved in Carlisle reverse’s 5-0 hammering away to Burnley on Tuesday. Carlisle are in third position while Hartlepool are fourteenth.

Nahki Wells’s Huddersfield Town, the Championship league leaders, play ninth-place Sheffield Wednesday in a Yorkshire derby on Sunday. The match will be televised on SportsMax at 8am Bermuda time.
