Jaellan Greaves has realised his dream of becoming a Fifa-licensed football agent.

The Somerset Trojans midfielder obtained his licence after successfully completing an intense exam at the Clyde Best Centre of Excellence last April.

“I took the exam and the results came back two weeks later when I found out I had passed,” Greaves told The Royal Gazette.

“It was a remote exam, but I took it up at the BFA. It had to be under exam conditions, so I couldn’t take it home or anything like that.

“I knew it was going to be tough. I didn’t expect it to be easy, but I prepared well enough in order to pass.”

The 25-year-old is in no rush to secure clients as he goes about laying the foundation for what he hopes will be a long and prosperous career in the industry.

“I am not looking for instant success, but in the long run I want to be successful in this industry,” Greaves added.

“Right now, I don’t have any players. People look for instant success but for me it’s about doing it right and I am in it for the longevity.

“I am only 25, so what I am willing to do is continue to network and build relationships with people in order to maximise the opportunities for potential clients so I can be the best agent that I can be for players.”

Greaves became inspired to pursue a career as a football agent during a three-year stint with the Watford football academy in England.

“I had this friend who was one of the better players for Watford and we had a conversation about him leaving the year before he actually left,” he said.

“The year when he left we were all sitting at the boarding house and he just said that he was leaving and going to this club. So from that day on I felt if I didn’t become a professional footballer, I would look to get into becoming a football agent.

“Even before that there were a lot of players there who had agents and I would see them getting sponsorships and stuff like that, so I felt it was something that I would be able to do, which is pretty much where this drive came from.”

Among those Greaves is forging partnerships with are some of the coaching staff he interacted with during his stint at the Watford academy.

“When I was at Watford I had a lot of coaches and since I have left I have been able to maintain those relationships,” he added.

“I have some contacts in England. Everybody wants to play in England but you have clubs in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Germany that want to take a look at players if you are the right player.

“I would never tell anybody not to go for the Premier League or reach for the top, but you can make a career outside of the Premier League and as a football agent I am just going to do my best to help players get to where they want to go.”

Greaves hopes to help as many Bermudians obtain professional contracts as possible and believes his experience at the Watford academy bodes well for his potential clients.

“I want to be successful in this industry and get as many Bermudians playing professional football as possible, because ultimately that’s going to improve the whole level of football in Bermuda and even the national team,” he said.

“I have been through the system, so I feel I am able to guide. Obviously, I didn’t become a professional footballer, but I went through the key stages of becoming a professional, so I feel like I have enough to offer in order to help to navigate players. I have been there, so I know what to expect.

“I was signed for Watford for three seasons, but I wasn’t really playing. I was training seven days a week but wasn’t playing, so for me I went through the hard end of football, but that taught me a lot.”

As for his duties as a football agent, Greaves explained: “The role of a football agent is to have their client’s best interest at heart, so you have to negotiate contracts and increase their opportunities, including commercially.

“A football career is short, so it’s important to be able to get as much for them as possible, but also what’s more important is preparing them for life after football because anything can happen.

“You could get an injury and then your career is shut, so for me that’s one of the most important aspects as well.

“You interact with the players and you have to make sure that you find the best football and environment in order for your player to succeed.

“What I expect from players as a football agent is that you represent yourself, your family and the club that you play for because ultimately your name is your brand, so whatever reputation you have as a person is going to be attached to your brand.

“It’s not just about what you do on the field but what you do off it as well.”
