Tuff Dogs aiming to cause another FA Cup upset
Tuff Dogs will be looking to claim another Premier Division scalp when they square off against Hamilton Parish in a David versus Goliath FA Cup quarter-final clash at Wellington Oval today (2.30pm).
The Corona League outfit produced a stunning upset in the previous round after prevailing against X-Roads Warriors on penalties after regulation and extra-time failed to separate the sides.
Tuff Dogs player-assistant coach Jensen Rogers is relishing the opportunity of causing another surprise while reaffirming that the pressure is firmly all on Parish.
“I definitely believe the pressure is on Parish because no Premier Division team wants to lose to a Corona League team, it’s a big gap in levels,” Rogers told The Royal Gazette.
“I don’t know who they are going to have on the field, but I feel they are going to field a strong unit to make sure they that they give themselves the best chance of progressing.
“We are expecting Parish to come and try and put the game away in the first half. That’s what all Premier Division teams will probably do at this stage against a lower opponent.
“The plan is to stay in the game as long as we can and the longer the game goes on the better our chances are of getting a result.
“The last game we played went all the way to penalties, where it is a 50-50 chance. I’m not saying we want to take it there, but we want to at least make a game of it.
“We are going there with no pressure and no expectations. We are just going there to enjoy it and see what happens.”
Parish coach Sergio Goater is cautiously optimistic his players will be equal to the task and has warned them not to take their opponents for granted.
“Complacency is the key thing and I have been preaching to the players that you can’t win the game by the draw,” he said.
“I don’t want guys thinking they have won the game before they have even played the match because the match still has to be played.
“It’s a home game for us on a big pitch so we just have to wear them down and once you wear them down our superiority should take over.
“I am fairly confident we can get the job done but we still have to guard against because it’s a cup game and anything can happen.”
Elsewhere today, Dandy Town and Devonshire Cougars will also face off at Goose Gosling Field (9pm).
Cougars have a psychological advantage having edged their rivals 3-2 in the previous encounter between the two clubs last December.
It emerged this week that Town are on the search for their fourth permanent head coach in as many years after Aaron Denkins reluctantly relinquished the role.
Cup action continues tomorrow with holders North Village hosting newly crowned First Division champions Devonshire Colts at Bernard Park (2.30pm) and last season’s runners-up PHC Zebras facing off against a resurgent St George’s Colts at PHC Field (2.30pm).
Like Parish, favourites Village will be trying to avoid an upset at the hands of underdogs Colts, while Zebras will be keen to keep their Triple Crown hopes alive.
