National champions will be crowned tomorrow when the Bermuda National Athletics Association Cross Country Championships are held at St George’s golf course.

Donna Watson, the president of the BNAA, expects a good turnout for the final race of the cross-country series, which will involve races in the junior and senior age groups starting at 9am with the under-10 and under 12 categories.

Youngsters to watch in the juniors include Jade Johnston, Selah Tuzo, Ryan Outerbridge, Iziah Tucker, Lynsey Palmer, Aaron Jacobs and Messiah Greaves, along with some of the older juniors, Kyrah Scraders and Daniel Oatley, and adult competitors such as Tamika Williams, Dean Breary, Trey Simons and Jay Donawa.

Many of the runners competed in last week’s KPMG Invitational Front Street Mile trials, including Breary and Simons, who is back running competitively again after a couple of years away from the sport.

Simons signalled his return to the running circuit by competing in this year’s May 24 Half Marathon and he has been a regular in the cross country, too, showing the form that made him one of the Island’s top juniors a few years ago.

Scraders was the top finisher among the high school girls in the mile trials, beating out schoolmate Quaashie Douglas and Quinnae Outerbridge, who could be two of her main competitors tomorrow.

Now there is also another crop of talented runners coming through, including West Pembroke student Johnston, who has had good performances in the cross country and was the fastest qualifier among the primary school girls in the mile trials.

“We are looking forward to this event and expect over 150 entries,” Watson said. “This should be a good event with some close finishes.”
