Tournament proves perfect tribute to Bean

Gavin Manders lauded the special success of the Craig Bean Memorial Championships, hailing it as the biggest tournament he has ever been involved with.

Manders Tennis Management hosted the event at the Fairmont Southampton last week in memory of Bean, who was the top junior player on the island when he died at the age of 18 in a road accident in 2000.

While Manders was always going to be proud of being given the opportunity to remember someone particularly important to him, even he did not envisage just how memorable the week would ultimately prove.

“Not only was it special for me to be able to honour Craig's memory but it was also the biggest tournament I've been involved with which was amazing,” he said. “We had a high level of tennis, a large number of competitors and huge support from the community, it really had everything.

“From my point of view I've certainly not seen anything quite as big as this tournament. The energy and passion for tennis embodied Craig in every way.

“The whole tournament was just proved really special for everyone involved in it.

“The level of support from players and spectators was incredible and it was a beautiful thing to see Bermuda come together the way they did for something so positive.”

On the court Tariq Simons continued his recent dominance of the local scene by cementing his top ranking status with victory over Manders in the final of the A Division category.

In the Women's Division, Kirstin Saltus proved victorious overall, while there was also joy for Moziah Selassie with his maiden Men's Open B title.

Malahku Selassie won the Green Ball category, while Ollie Anderson took the honours in the Orange Ball category.

The Over-45 Division title went to Jon Brunson and Arnold Manders clinched victory in the Over-55 Division.
