No shocks as top seeds progress in national squash championships

Still in contention: Micah and Eilidh Franklin are through to the semi-finals of the Gnosis Bermuda National Squash Championships (File photograph)

There have been no major surprises in this year’s Gnosis Bermuda National Squash Championships with most of the top seeds through to Thursday’s semi-finals.

Micah Franklin, the men’s defending champion needed 23 minutes to brush aside Kion Knights 11-6, 11-6, 11-1, and book his spot in the last four of the competition.

Standing in Franklin’s way to the final is Kristian Muldoon, who was stretched by D'Vario Thompson in the quarter-final before winning 3-2.

In the other semi-final, last year’s runner-up Noah Browne faces Taylor Carrick. Browne needed just a quarter of an hour to subdue Dylan Pratt 3-0, while Carrick defeated third seed Anaya Smith 11-3, 11-8, 11-2 in the quarter-finals.

Melina Turk, the women’s No 1 seed, goes up against fourth-seed Joann Bielby in the semi-finals. Turk, who is making her maiden appearance in the competition, required just 14 minutes to triumph 11-4, 11-1, 11-2 over the promising Gabrielle Turchiaro. Bielby took a minute less to overcome Somers Stevenson 11-3, 11-4, 11-8.

Eilidh Franklin, the reigning champion, faces Susie Howells in the semi-finals. Franklin won 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 against Suzanne Rose in the quarter-finals with Howells needing four sets to get the better of Shannon Mann 11-3, 9-11, 11-2, 11-3.

In the men’s over 40s, No 1 seed John Fletcher has Chris Dawson as his semi-final opponent, with the winner playing whoever comes out on top between Hadleigh Farrer and Anthony Fellows.

Bielby is also eyeing a spot in the women’s over 40s final but has to deal with Terrie Morris-Greenslade first. The winner of that encounter will meet Rose or Mann in the final.

Nick Leach, the No 1 seed in the men’s over 50s, faces Peter Drury in the semi-finals. Whoever triumphs will take on either Spencer Moss or Anthony White.

Edward Wickham and Tony Riker are targeting a spot in the men’s over 60s final, with the winner of their semi-final showdown to take on Ricky Spence or Adam Hawley.
