Bermuda gets unexpected publicity in new 'Gulliver's Travels'

Bermuda has been given some unexpected publicity in a film topping international box-office charts.The 3D adaptation of Jonathan Swift’s novel “Gulliver’s Travels” is proving popular in Britain, Australia and Spain; and according to the Department of Tourism could give the Island some welcome exposure.The movie, loosely based on the 18th century satire, features comedic actor Jack Black and has grossed $78 million world-wide.It centres around a travel writer who takes an assignment in Bermuda, but finds himself in a place called Lilliput, where he is captured by miniature people.While considered a disappointment in the US, it was the top earning movie in the UK and made $10.9 million on its opening weekend.It also grossed $2.8 million in Australia and $1.8 million in Spain.A Department of Tourism spokesperson said the movie could serve to promote the Island to a vast range of people.“Throughout our history, Bermuda has been frequently referenced internationally in novels, in motion pictures, and in the arts.“So in this contemporary environment, we certainly welcome the added exposure of the Bermuda name as this is definitely a wonderful way to promote the Island to a broader audience.”
