Young athletes in Mexico for NACAC Championships
Six Bermudian athletes are in Tlaxcala, Mexico, to compete in the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association Under-18 & Under-23 Championships.
Pria Wilson and Amara Samuels, who are both running the 100 and 200 metres, will be competing in the under-18 age group alongside javelin thrower Tatiana Sousa.
Zydon Lightbourne Furbert (200 and 400 metres) and Surii Russell (400 and 800 metres) will be competing in the same age group, while Norre Robinson (100 and 200 metres) is the only competitor in the under-23 category.
The six athletes will be in action from Friday to Sunday at Sport Complex Una Nueva Historia in Apizaco.
Wilson is representing Bermuda for the first time since the 2024 Carifta Games in Grenada.
“I haven’t had the opportunity to represent Bermuda in a while, so I’m really excited to be a part of the team again,” the 16-year-old said.
“For this meet, I want to put everything I’ve been working on into action, perform to the best of my ability and hopefully achieve even more.”
Samuels, Lightbourne Furbert and Sousa, who were part of Bermuda’s squad at the Carifta Games in Grenada, are hoping to finish the season strong, while Russell has been handed an opportunity to shine after missing out on Carifta Games qualification.
“Although I missed out on the Carifta Games, I continued to train, improve and remained focused on my goals,” the 17-year-old said.
“Missing out was upsetting because it was an opportunity I had worked hard for and a chance to continue developing and competing at a higher level.
“But I believe everything happens for a reason and being selected to represent Bermuda at the NACAC Championships feels like another opportunity to show my potential and put all of my hard work into action.
“I thank God for opening this door and giving me the chance to compete against some of the same athletes I would have faced at Carifta.
“Since I don’t get many opportunities to compete overseas, this experience will be very important in helping me gain confidence, improve my race experience and continue working towards my long-term goals as an athlete.
“My goal in Mexico is to achieve personal bests in both the 400 and 800, continue developing as an athlete and represent Bermuda proudly.”
Fresh from running Bermuda’s second-fastest time in 4x100 relay at the Barbados Grand Prix, Robinson is keen to build towards his maiden appearance at the Commonwealth Games, where he will be running the 200 metres.
“I’m keen to make the finals in both the 100 and 200,” Robinson said.
“This has a similar process to Commonwealth Games along with the level of competition.”
