Reggie Lambe looks set to relaunch his career with Major League Soccer side Toronto FC next season.Lambe spent a week training at the Canadian outfit prior to Bermuda’s recent World Cup qualifiers, with the club understood to be keen to sign him when the transfer window re-opens in January.Toronto had intended sending a scout to watch the 20-year-old in action for his country but decided it wasn’t necessary such was the strong impression he made on the club’s coaches.Former England striker Paul Mariner, now Toronto’s director of player development, is a known admirer of Lambe who has been out of contract since being released by Ipswich Town at the end of last season.Mariner is also a close friend of Bermuda Hogges owner Paul Scope who first alerted Toronto to Lambe’s availability.Scope is no stranger to giving Bermuda players a helping hand, having played the role of facilitator when Khano Smith signed for Mariner’s former team, New England Revolution in 2005.Although Lambe is thought to have initially favoured a move back to the UK, he is understood to have had a change of heart since training with Toronto, who have qualified for next season’s Concacaf Champions League.Scope said he was hopeful the deal would go ahead and believed Toronto would be a good fit for the young winger.“I hope a deal will be done and that Reggie can relaunch his career with Toronto,” said Scope.“Devarr Boyles (BFA youth director) and Khano Smith have spoken to Reggie and they both also believe he would do well in the MLS.“I think the MLS would suit Reggie’s style of play and Paul Mariner is keen for the move to go ahead. He has also expressed interest in other Bermuda players.”Lambe made four Carling Cup starts and two Championship substitute appearances during his time at Portman Road. He also played seven games while on loan at Bristol Rovers last term.Toronto, who are coached by ex-Lazio midfielder Aron Winter, forged links with Hogges last summer as part of a mutually beneficial agreement.
