Flora Duffy has ended her season $30,000 richer after finishing third in the three-day Island House Invitational Triathlon.

The Bermuda triathlete was second overall heading into the sprint stage, but the exertions of the previous two days, plus her Xterra World Championship win last weekend finally took their toll yesterday.

Gwen Jorgensen won the elite women’s division and $60,000 first prize, with Lisa Norden taking home $45,000 and second place overall after she won the sprint triathlon yesterday morning.

“Hello offseason,” Duffy wrote on Instagram. “Incredible three days of racing at the @islandhousetri. So happy to finish 3rd overall and end the year on a high.

“Been a crazy busy last 7 days! Congrats to the speedy @gwenjorgensen and @lisanorden1. And of course everyone who raced!”

Duffy began the day in the running to win the overall title after coming second in Olympic Enduro stage, on Saturday, which was won by Jorgensen.

That result gave Duffy a 22 second lead on Norden, while she trailed Jorgensen by 41 seconds.

However, the Bermuda triathlete lost ground to both after the 750-metre swim yesterday, with Jorgensen first out of the water in 10min 17sec, Norden second in 10:25 and Duffy third in 10:29.

It was on the bike, normally Duffy’s strength, that Jorgensen and Norden really pulled away, with Norden completing the 20km ride in 33:34, more than a minute faster than both Jorgensen and Duffy.

At that stage Norden, who trailed Jorgensen by 1:03 at the start of the day was pushing for overall honours too, and her 17:16 5km run almost pushed her over the line as she won the third stage in 1:01:56.

As it was, Jorgensen posted a 16:39 to finish in 1:02:25.8, giving her a combined time of 3:27:47.8 for the three days, with Norden second in 3:28:21.0.

Duffy ran 17:00, and finished the third stage in 1:02:51.2 for a combined time of 3:28:54.2.

In the men’s division, Javier Gomez comfortably won the overall classification after coming second in today’s event.

Gomez finished in 56:02.1, behind Cameron Dye who completed the sprint stage in 55:39.8. Richard Murray was third in 56:25.9.

Gomez, who won Saturday’s stage, had a combined time of 3:08:21.1, with Murray more than a minute back in second and Tim Don third in 3:11:13.3.
