Vigil against violence planned
message to authorities next week.
The Women's Resource Centre and the Physical Abuse Centre have organised a community vigil against violence.
And they have invited all concerned citizens to turn out for the event which will take place at Albuoy's Point off Front Street on February 3, beginning at 5.30 p.m.
The vigil will be a way of enabling everyone to express their concern about violence on the Island, the groups said.
It will also be an opportunity to pay respects to the victims of violence, "especially in light of recent and current incidents relating to this issue''.
"Everyone concerned about violence in the community is encouraged to attend this vigil,'' the groups said in a joint Press statement.
"It is hoped that a large turnout for this event will send a message to those parties in positions of power who can influence change to limit violence, the message is that something must be done now to deter prospective offenders, and protect potential victims.'' Women's Resource Centre's director of counselling services Mrs. Sharon Apopa, Physical Abuse Centre chairperson Mrs. Arlene Swan, Mr. Melvyn Simmons of Probation Services, and CID Chief Insp. Jonathan Smith will speak at the vigil.
The vigil will be blessed at the start and closing by Canon Thomas Nisbett and the Rev. Malcolm Eve, respectively.
Mr. Shine Hayward and Mr. Elton Richardson will make musical contributions.
