Worthy of preservation
October 16, 2009
Dear Sir,
The following group of people from Westmeath Seniors Home strongly protest the demolition of the Lane School on East Broadway. Replacing this building which is part of our Heritage, for rezoning for commercial use with a potential five-storey building is grossly repulsive. The Lane School is of historic importance and more than 600 children of freed black slaves have been educated there. The original school remains largely intact and is worthy of being preserved. Please do not destroy part of our heritage.

A Morgan's Point solution
October 14, 2009
Dear Sir,
I would like to add my "three- penny-worth" to the a cleanup of Morgan's Point. I would like to see Correia Construction get the contract to clean it up, as they seem to have the know-how in getting things done properly. The new pier and surroundings at Dockyard being a good example. My suggestion for cleaning up the fuel tanks at Morgan's Point would be to "fire" them, have controlled burning when the wind is blowing from the southwest causing the smoke and ash to go over the Great Sound causing little or no annoyance to the general public. Even "Bassetts" cave could be fired up in the same way. When the large black oil tank is burned out, the government could put all those asbestos containers they have stored up, be placed in the remains of that large oil tank covered over with sand or rubble and you would not know that this asbestos is there. Remember that asbestos comes out of the ground in the first place. Again I say, give Correia Construction the job of cleaning up Morgan's Point, they have the equipment and good personnel to get the job done.

P.s. I worked at Morgan's Point when it was the Naval Base and I know a lot about it.
We must get together
October 16, 2009
Dear Sir,
For the last few years I have believed that only four people stood between Bermuda and political chaos: Larry Dennis, the Auditor General, Tim Hodgson, the editor of the Mid-Ocean News, Richard Ground, the Chief Justice, and yourself as Editor of The Royal Gazette. The first two, Dennis and Hodgson, are now gone, the third appears to be endangered and you are under constant attack. The exploiters have taken over this once very successful country. It is true that we all need to get together ... to stop the corruption.

Seeing only opportunity
October 15, 2009
Dear Sir,
The quintessential Bermuda Blade Runner has just swept past me… 8.20 a.m., Middle Road, heading to town, the dip before Chapel Road she eased majestically by, Honda clamped twixt massive marbled thighs, hair jouncing behind in the 65 km breeze. A true mistress of the highways and crowded local Island byways. Left arm hanging flaccid by her side tipped with sabre-like nails that flashed and dripped colourful patterns on the sides of the taxis and traffic, head gently resting on the pillow of her shoulder, as she launched into her latest ace boy somewhere, through a shocking pink and crystal shiny Blackberry Pearl… I feel for him…
Buses move apart in the certain knowledge that they just have to – as a cruise ship gives way to the tug or swell it knows so well. Indicators are no longer necessary – the traffic just knows and moves apart… Not a care for what is behind her she sees only opportunity, and wing mirrors are only for cars anyway…Then she is gone, leaving only a sense of inadequacy on the faceless commuters and a broad path for me to follow in…

The objective
October 17, 2009
Dear Sir,
Shawn Crockwell (who I know personally) may coax his breakaway group to negotiate with Bob Richards (who I also know personally), a stalwart UBP leader. The objective would be to form a new party seeking a majority Government to bring about equal opportunity, social justice and a change for the better Bermuda. If it is decided to call the new party the Bermuda Democratic Alliance we can cheer – Long Live Bermuda.

Literary woes
October 20, 2009
Dear Sir,
Greetings Mr. Editor, Minister and Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and the relevant staff! Is there anyone capable of advising me and the entire user- friendly community when (a rough estimate will do), the upstairs (first floor) section of The Bermuda National public library will reopen (i.e. post renovations)? Some of us really do use, miss and enjoy the expansive choice of literature.
