Nahki Wells has praised David Wagner, the Huddersfield Town head coach, for “revitalising” his career and restoring his confidence in front of goal.

Wells has hit 14 goals for Huddersfield since Wagner replaced Chris Powell at the helm in November, taking his tally to 18 for the season, and believes the German is responsible for his much-improved overall game.

“I can’t thank him [Wagner] enough because I genuinely believe he has revitalised my career,” Wells told the Huddersfield Examiner.

“He’s come in and told me ‘there is a lot more I can get from you’.

“I believed him and he has brought it out of me, so credit to him, the staff, the players, and the chairman [Dean Hoyle] who has brought me in.”

The 25-year-old picked up three accolades at the club’s annual award ceremony on Monday, winning the Players’ Player of the Year, the Hargreaves Memorial Trophy Player of the Year and the Golden Boot for his 18 goals.

“I’ve only ever won the Golden Boot award since being in England,” Wells said. “Personally, that’s an important award as a striker, but to win the two awards off players and fans means so much.

“It means I’ve come on beyond just goals, in terms of importance to the team, to show the character to lead and to be the one to rely on for goals as well. I think it will only help me to grow as a player.”

Wells, who has been linked with a move to Barclays Premier League side Southampton, believes he is capable of achieving his top-flight ambitions with Huddersfield.

“As always, I want to get better every season,” said the club’s £1.3 million record signing.

“As a player I think I’ve improved every year, moved up as an individual or through the team statistics, so next year I want to get promoted.

“I want to move the club forward. I don’t want to set the bar too high but the sky’s the limit, I guess.

“If you don’t reach for those goals you won’t get them, so we’re going into next season fully focused, hopefully with a bigger squad and a full preseason under this manager.”

Huddersfield, who are nineteenth in the Sky Bet Championship, are at home to Brentford in their final game of the season on Saturday.

In League One, Rai Simons and Chesterfield end their season away at Bradford City.
