Wells aiming to end season on a high

Wells finds the net for Huddersfield against Rotherham in midweek

Nahki Wells has two ambitions left for the season — hitting the 20-goal mark and helping Huddersfield Town finish as high up the Sky Bet Championship table as possible to help attract more quality players to the club.

Huddersfield, who are sixteenth, reached the 50-point mark on Tuesday night when they drew 1-1 away to Rotherham United in a Yorkshire derby.

Wells scored a 22nd-minute equaliser to earn the point that ensures Huddersfield are safe from relegation with three games remaining.

Rotherham, under new manager Neil Warnock, who formerly managed Huddersfield, extended their unbeaten run to ten games.

Wells, who is likely to be in action for Bermuda in the second round of the Caribbean Cup in June, wants to finish the season with a flourish and add to the 18 goals he has scored so far.

The striker’s season has been transformed since former manager Chris Powell was fired in early November, a day after Wells netted his fourth goal of the season in a 2-2 draw away to Reading.

Wells was in and out of the team under Powell but things have turned around for him since David Wagner arrived, with the 25-year-old responding to the confidence shown in him by the new head coach.

The former Dandy Town player believes a strong finish to the campaign will help bring new signings to the club for next term.

“We don’t want the season to fizzle out,” Wells said. “We want to finish as high up the table as possible.

“If we have a strong finish that always helps in attracting players.

“I don’t think our league position is justified for this club or this team but the higher you are, the better the chance you have to attract better players.”

Wells, who turns 26 in June, still has ambitions of playing in the Barclays Premier League. Huddersfield play Birmingham, Bristol City and Brentford in their remaining fixtures.

“I was really pleased to help us get three points at Blackburn [Rovers], especially because they are in and around us,” Wells said after last weekend’s 2-0 win when he netted the opener.

“It was a must-win for us and to get that victory is the main thing. As for 20 goals, it’s not over until it’s over and I still think I can average one a game until the end of the season.

“I just have to take my opportunities when they come. At Blackburn I probably should have got more, but it’s the result that matters.”

Huddersfield have shown their ambitions by signing promotion-winning Dynamo Dresden captain Michael Hefele on a three-year contract.

The 25-year-old centre back will arrive as a free agent at the John Smith’s Stadium on July 1.

Hefele joins fellow German arrival Chris Loewe in David Wagner’s squad for next season and the head coach expects the 6ft 4in defender — who watched Huddersfield play Burnley in March — to make a big impression.

“Michael’s qualities will suit the Sky Bet Championship perfectly,” Wagner said.

“He enjoys the physical battle with the strikers and all aspects of defending, plus he is happy to play with the ball on the pitch.”

Wells is fourth in the Championship scoring charts with 17 league goals, seven behind Andre Gray of Burnley and four behind Ross McCormack of Fulham who has 21. Hull City’s Abel Hernandez has 18 goals.
