Eagles hope to make their promotion point
The second promotion spot could be secured tonight at Goose Gosling Field when Somerset Eagles take on Flanagan’s Onions at 9.00 needing just a point from the top-of-the-table clash to join Onions in the Premier Division next season.
Onions lead Eagles by a single point but have already clinched promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt after relegation with St George’s a year ago.
With two matches remaining, Eagles need only a draw to eliminate third-placed St George’s from contention. However, a loss for Eagles and a St George’s win tomorrow against neighbours St David’s would make things very interesting on the final weekend of league, when Eagles play Wolves and St George’s take on Paget.
St George’s can gain promotion only on goal difference over Eagles, so they will be hoping that Onions beat Eagles and then Wolves do the same next weekend when they play Eagles.
However, St David’s will no doubt have revenge on their minds tomorrow when they meet St George’s for the third time this season.
It was in their first meeting in late November that St George’s thrashed them 6-0 to end their unbeaten run and knock them off stride at the top of the standings. A few days later, St George’s beat them again in the Shield competition.
Onions may also be thinking about revenge, having lost to Eagles 4-1 at White Hill Field in their first meeting. Victory would also make them First Division champions with one match to go, away to St David’s next weekend.
St David’s had a bizarre end to their promotion run when they showed up at White Hill two weeks ago without their players’ cards and subsequently forfeited the points.
In tonight’s other match at Somerset Cricket Club, at 7.00, Ireland Island Rangers meet BAA at Somerset Cricket Club, while tomorrow will feature Wolves playing Young Men’s Social Club at Devonshire Recreation Club and Paget taking on X-Roads at Southampton Oval.
