Summer vacation is winding down and school will soon be in session. As many schools start back up on September 7, The Royal Gazette wanted to know are you ready for school?A common sentiment among some students was the brevity of the summer holiday. When asked if he was ready to go back, Sandys Secondary Middle School student Jesse Washington said: “No. Not really.”The 13-year-old added: “There’s just no more break. I want more time.”Thirteen-year-old Kentu Browne-Evans, grandson of Dame Lois Browne-Evans, felt the same. “I want more summer time,” said the Whitney Institute student.St George’s resident Daniel Oatley, 15, echoed the same thoughts.“I’d like at least another week,” said the Saltus Grammar School student. “I’m just kind of upset that summer is over already, it was too short.”Bermuda High students Megan Pearson and Haley Ball, both 15, also noted that the holiday wasn’t long enough.“We’re not that ready,” said Ms Pearson.“There’s just not enough summer break. We’ve been working in the summer so it’s hard to go back,” added Ms Ball.Other students, however, had different opinions.Seventeen-year-old Jason Simons, a CedarBridge Academy student said: “I’m ready because I’m starting to forget what I learned.”Sandys resident Zoe Faires, 14, said that she was ready, too.“I’m just excited to go back to school and see my friends. I don’t like being out of school because I’m not learning anything,” said the Mount Saint Agnes Academy student.“I like the concept of learning,” she added. Her friend, Savannah Staines, 14, was also excited to return to the classroom.“We get to choose what subjects we want this year so it’s exciting to learn what we want,” she said. Ms Staines also attends Mount Saint Agnes. It seemed many other young people were ready to see their friends as well, as noted by Donisha Pearman.“I’m ready to see my friends,” said the 14-year-old CedarBridge Academy student. Her sister, Tammisha Pearman — also a CedarBridge Academy student — had a similar answer.“I’m ready to go back and just chill with my friends and have fun,” said the 15-year-old.The girls’ mother, Zoletta Pearman of St David’s added: “We’re pretty much ready. We started early, getting bits and pieces.”Other parents of Bermuda students also weighed in with their opinions.“Actually mine are not really [ready],” said Sandys resident Michael Hayward.Mr Hayward is the father of an 11-year-old TN Tatem student, as well as a four-year-old Warwick Preschooler. He told The Royal Gazette that the children still needed to do some shopping.“They need to get all their school supplies, like school bags and stuff like that there — the pencils, pens.“They still want to enjoy summer but they’re starting to wind down and understand they need to go back to school.”Mrs Smith, the mother of a four-year-old girl due to start West Pembroke Primary, said that her daughter was ready. However, she was frustrated about something else.“I’m ready for her to go back to school,” said the Pembroke resident.“But I’m a bit annoyed that [school] starts on a Friday. I think they could have picked a better day.”
