Five-star PHC crush Blazers
PHC 5 Boulevard 1
Kyle Lightbourne's PHC stormed into the next round of the Friendship Trophy after thrashing Boulevard in a goal-laden display at Bernard Park yesterday.
Still unbeaten in the league, Zebras continued their promising start to the season with a convincing victory over Blazers thanks to a brace from Blenn Bean and strikes from Cecoy Robinson, Johnny Ball and Lloyd Holder.
Blazers striker Temiko Wilson scored his team's lone goal.
In fairness to Blazers there was little between the two sides during a lively first half which saw PHC take the lead through an acrobatic volley from makeshift defender Cecoy Robinson. Wilson then drew Blazers level by tapping home from close range after his initial one-on-one effort had bounced back off the woodwork, but Bean then restored Zebras' advantage by beating Blazers goalkeeper Shejuan Swan at his near post.
Bean's strike just before the half-time whistle seemed to deflate Blazers who never recovered from the set-back with PHC wholly dominant throughout the second period.
Johnny Ball got his name on the scoresheet with a neat finish following a clever one-two with Antwan Russell before substitute Lloyd Holder killed off any hopes of a Blazer fightback with a splendid volley from outside the box.
Bean then wrapped up the scoring with a penalty late on after the marauding full-back Robinson had been hauled down by Blazers sub Teiko Lowe.
Coach Lightbourne praised his team's one-sided second half performance but stressed that he was not get carried away with Zebras' bright start to the campaign just yet.
“The first half was pretty even but we really stepped things up in the second half,” he said. “It's been a good start for us considering we were without guys like Antwan Russell, Omar (Shakir) at the beginning of the season, while Chris Furbert still has not shown up yet. Antwan's certainly given us more attacking threat not just with his goals but with the way he sets them up for others.
“There's still a long way to go and I know it's a cliche but we're taking one game at a time because there can also be a bad spell just around the corner.”
