Wells will get his chance, says Powell

Waiting game: Wells has found himself on the bench

Chris Powell, the Huddersfield Town manager, believes out-of-favour striker Nahki Wells remains a “big player” at the Sky Bet Championship club.

Wells has found his opportunities limited since the arrival of Grant Holt, the experienced forward, on loan from Wigan Athletic and has been among the substitutes for three of the past four games despite a match-winning brace against Millwall.

The 24-year-old is again expected to be on the bench for the match away to Ipswich Town tomorrow as Powell continues with the 4-3-3 formation that has helped to yield 11 points from a possible 15 to move the West Yorkshire club up to sixteenth.

But the former Charlton manager has reassured Wells, the club’s £1.3 million record signing, that he will get his chance to impress.

“Nahki is training brilliantly,” Powell said. “He’s naturally frustrated that he’s not playing, but equally he would be the first to admit that it is hard for me to get him in the team, as the three front boys have been excellent — they’ve given us a real balance.

“However, I won’t keep this formation for ever; I will change.

“Sometimes you get a feel to make one or two changes if you think it’s right for the game you’re going to play. It won’t always work out, but at the moment it has done.

“Nahki is important to me and this team because he is a goalscorer at this level. Every manager will tell you that the more of those you have, the better. He knows he will get chances and when he does, I’ll be the first to hope he takes them. He’s already won a game on his own with his two goals against Millwall and we will definitely see more of that. He’s a big player for us and the fact he hasn’t started recently means nothing.”

Other Bermudians set to be involved with their clubs in England tomorrow include Reggie Lambe, the Mansfield Town winger, whose side take on York City away in League Two.

Goalkeeper Freddy Hall, fresh from an excellent winning debut with Telford, will target a repeat performance when the Vanarama Premier’s bottom club take on Spennymoor Town, the Evo Stik North first division team, in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.

Roger Lee, the Weston-super-Mare player, is also set to be in FA Cup action away to Witham Town, while Taurean Manders’s Sholing are in Southern League South & West Division action at home to Taunton.

Tahj Bell, the Bermuda goalkeeper, and his Hitchen team-mates will take on Bideford in the Southern League Premier Division.
