Augustus joins US tour circuit

Daniel Augustus is flying to Florida tomorrow as he takes the next step along his journey to become a professional golfer.

The Port Royal employee will be in the United States for eight days competing in two Moonlight Tour events and a West Florida Golf Tour event.

Augustus kicks off his trip with the West Florida event at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Sarasota on Sunday and then has two Moonlight events lined up at the Rio Pinar course in Orlando, next Tuesday, and lastly at the Western Orange Golf Club in Winter Garden next Thursday.

Only recently accepted into the ranks of the Professional Golf Association of Bermuda, Augustus has been making a strong showing on the Island's Jack Daniels Golf Tour in recent weeks. But he still wasn't good enough to beat Paul Adams on Monday.

The Tucker's Point professional won the second 'major' of the year, carding a two-over par 73 to beat Augustus by three shots at Mid Ocean Club. Cornell Bean finished a shot further back in third.

In an exciting finish, first place was up for grabs coming into the final few holes and a dramatic 18 eventually separated the men from the boys. Bean dropped out of the running after taking a quintuple-bogey nine as his short game crumbled completely and ruined what had been a very good previous 17 holes.

Adams and Augustus were tied going down the last but while Augustus carded a double-bogey six, Adams hit his second shot out of a greenside bunker to within nine feet and finished with a birdie.

Elsewhere, Jarryd Dillas saw his dreams of competing at this year's US Open disappear after a poor second round at a sectional qualifying tournament in Atlanta.

The Bermudian shot a second round eight-over par 80 at the Settindown Creek Golf Club and finished in a tie for 14th, well out of contention for one of only two qualifying spots.

It was all very different after the first round, however, when Dillas was third at the half-way stage following a one-under par 71. Five bogeys and two double-bogeys in the second round undid all that good work and ended his hopes of a place at the second major of the season.
