Do or die time for Wollmann

On the cusp: Wollmann needs a strong finish

Cecilia Wollmann is hoping to gate-crash the medal race with the Laser Radial sailor facing a “do-or-die” final day of the opening series at the Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Wollmann had another promising day on Lake Ontario, where yesterday's three races were held, finishing runner-up in her second outing to leave her in eleventh position on the leader-board with 92 points.

The 17-year-old, who came thirteenth and twelfth in her other races, believes a consistently strong display today could be enough to secure a top-eight finish and advance to tomorrow's medal race, where the points will be doubled.

“I know I can hang with the top guys now,” said Wollmann. “If I manage to get into the medal race I think I will barely be in. But that will be good in some ways because I can only move up then.

“If I have a good day tomorrow I may be able to scrape in.

“That will definitely exceed my expectations and if I get into the medal race I will be really, really happy.”
