Throw pair foiled by 'nerve' attack
It was a disappointing Carifta Games for the under-20 throwing team of James Bergl and Derrick Golding.
Bergl was especially frustrated after a 48.38 metre throw earned him a fifth-place finish in the discus, with event nerves and an over-concern about not fouling costing him dearly.
“I am quite upset about the discus,” said the giant Bergl, also a strong rugby player and occasional Fight Night boxer.
“I threw a practice throw about 52 metres - which would have been enough to win me a gold.
“But in the main event I was worrying too much about staying in the circle and I don't think I was using my hips enough - I think I need to relax more.”
In the shot put, Bergl's weaker event, he finished tenth with a throw of 14.04 metres but within a metre of his personal best.
And Golding blamed nerves for a “terrible” couple of days during which he failed to register a single throw, fouling three times each in the shot put and the discus.
Despite encouragement and coaching from Lovintz Tota, gold-medallist in the older age category, Jade Darrell (ninth) and Kijaun Wilkinson (tenth) struggled in the under-17 long jump. They leapt 6.09 and 6.01 metres respectively.
In the under-17 800 metres, Taijuan Talbot failed to repeat his gold medal form from the 1500 metres, finishing seventh in 2.02.62.
In the girls' race, Brittany Pitt finished last in 2.34.36 although Deanne Lightbourn picked up the bronze.
Andrea Jackson, the only hurdle runner in the Bermuda team, finished last in the under-20 100m hurdles in 15.69.
In the bright sunshine of Saturday, Eulannae Douglas failed to reach the final of the under-17 200m in the morning session, finishing seventh in her heat in 26.58 - still her fastest time of the year.
In the male version of that event, neither Miquel Lambert (23.63) nor Tristan Francis (22.84) qualified, finishing in third and fourth in their heats respectively.
Brittney Marshall, after finishing fifth in the discus, again struggled to keep up with the older opposition, managing only sixth place in the under-20 shot put - the 16-year-old threw 12.14 metres.
In the Saturday night relays, Bermuda's lack of depth showed as the Island finished last in both the male and female 4 x 100 metre events.
The girls' team of Eulannae Douglas, Arantxa King, Deanne Lightbourn and Kalita Furbert finished in 48.75 while Miquel Lambert, Taijaun Talbot, Jade Darrell and Tristan Francis clocked 45.10.
