Airport to decide on concession
International Airport have followed through and submitted a business proposal, it emerged yesterday.
And the Air Advisory Committee will meet today or tomorrow to decide which proposal it will accept.
Terminal manager Michael Osborn said the next stage in the process would for the AAC to look at the proposals thoroughly.
"We also want to get something that would be aesthetically pleasing and fit in with the Bermuda ideal,'' he explained. "And we also want to get something that will be of benefit to visitors.'' Mr. Osborn said he expected the board would meet later on in the week but that everything discussed in those meetings would be kept confidential.
And he added, the successful bidder would take over the 335 square foot space in the US post-security level of the Airport and establish the concession.
LIGHTNING CUTS POWER WEA Lightning cuts power Residents of Pembroke, St. George's, and Smith's Parishes were without power early yesterday morning after lightning struck three times, Belco spokesperson Greg Engle told The Royal Gazette .
Repair crews were called out at 4.45 a.m. after lightning hit a power pole in the Fairylands, Serpentine, and Pitts Bay Road area, cutting power to an undetermined number of residents.
Partial power was restored to Serpentine Road by about 8 a.m. while residents in Fairylands were not due back on line until yesterday afternoon.
Lightning also cut power to smaller branch lines in Tucker's Town and Gilbert Hill, off Verdmont Road in Smith's Parish.
FLOODINGS EXAMINED GVT Floodings examined The Corporation of Hamilton will meet later this week to discuss the city's flooding problem.
Corporation Secretary Roger Sherratt told The Royal Gazette this week that the meeting was being arranged since no solid solutions had been found after rainwater flooded the Serpentine Road/Dundonald Street area earlier this month.
Owners of Masters Ltd. and the Olympic Club complained the Corporation had been slow to react to the problem which had cost them time and money.
At the time, Mr. Sherratt said the area near Bull's Head parking lot, where the Pembroke Canal runs directly beneath, was below sea level and that it was easy to flood.
"Any buildings within a few feet of the canal are likely to be subject to flood,'' he added.
BUS VAULT STOLEN CRM Bus vault stolen Police are investigating the theft of a vault stolen from a Government bus.
Spokesperson Evelyn James Barnett said the "culprit(s)'' gained entry to the bus, which was parked at the Public Transportation Board's St. George's depot, between midnight on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
DIAMOND RING TAKEN CRM Diamond ring taken A couple lost a 102-year-old diamond ring when thieves burgled their Ord Road home.
Police said the incident occurred on during Saturday night after the couple had retired to bed around 10 p.m.
The couple told Police they woke up in the morning to find someone had entered their home and stole a 102-year-old rose gold ring from a container.
The ring is described as having three mine-cut diamonds set on prongs, and two 2/3 karat diamonds on two sides of a one karat diamond.
RESIDENCE BURGLED CRM Residence burgled A Paget woman watched as a thief rifled through her purse and stole money and jewellery, then made his escape.
Police said the incident occurred around 2.30 a.m. on Monday as two female occupants slept in their Salt Kettle home.
One of the women woke to find a man in her bedroom going through her purse.
An undisclosed amount of US cash and jewellery were stolen.
The man was described as black, about five-feet, ten-inches tall, of "bulky'' build, and wearing loose clothing.
