Teacher wins $10,000 grant

Government helped a Bermudian author spread environmental awareness among primary students in a third round of environmental grant giveaways for this year.

At an award ceremony at the Botanical Gardens on Wednesday, Environment Minister Neletha Butterfield said she was particularly moved to present a grant of $10,000 to David Chapman for his book, "Daddy and I Explore the Tide Pools".

"Not all the time do young men produce what he produced," Ms Butterfield said. "I offer him special congratulations on a wonderful job."

The 31-year-old environmental science teacher thanked the Ministry for his second grant, his first going towards a community/revitalisation garden.

"Daddy and I Explore the Tide Pools" was sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Education to supply 300 books to all of the Island's primary three classes.

"When all primary three students have the book it will promote environmental awareness in the community," Mr. Chapman said.

Ms Butterfield said $47,000 was handed out on Wednesday.

Bertram Guishard was given $10,000 for culling invasive Mexican/Brazil pepper trees while Ann Marie DeGraff was awarded $10,000 for her work on innovative agriculture.

Bruce E. Williams was given $6,000 to make an informational video, "Hidden Waters Beneath Bermuda", which informed the public about diving in Bermuda's caves.

And $6,000 was given to Ras Mykkal for his photography series, "Seeing the Unseen", which highlighted unappreciated views of nature.

"We get so busy with our schedules we take the beauty around us for granted," Mr. Mykkal said.

Earl Furbert was given $5,000 for a community/revitalisation garden.

He said he had just finished restoring a 16th Century house and could now start renovating its garden.

The Minister encouraged the public to think deeply about potential projects for the future.

And even those who failed to get a grant could reapply, she said, as long as they were prepared to write two six-month progress reports.
