Unity, understanding and finding solutions to Island’s challenges are foremost wishes of politicians
The end of the year is always a time of reflection for many as we look to the year ahead. It is also a time when we make resolutions - some are broken before the New Year even begins. But as we head into another year, coming out of one that saw many challenges, The Royal Gazette spoke to a cross section of Bermuda’s lawmakers to find out what they are hoping for in the New Year that lies ahead.Premier Paula Cox said: “My greatest wish for Bermuda in 2012 is to see our people stand up and recognise the opportunity we have to make this country great. As Government, we have a significant responsibility to craft a vision and to devise a policy and legislative framework to make that vision a reality. However the most critical element is for us as a community to work towards the common goal. Too often we behave like atoms, each shooting off in different directions.”On that note she added: “We have to operate like a flock of geese flying in formation pushing forward and helping each other on the trail. When one gets tired the other takes the lead, but we arrive at our destination together. United, not all the same, but sharing a common goal. The only way to have change is to make it happen. 2012 will be no different from 2011 in terms of some of the real challenges we can expect to face as the global economy continues to sputter. However 2012 will require us to push ourselves further than we have before.”“We must be far better, more productive, more creative, more welcoming than we have ever been. Remember that old slogan, ‘Bermuda is you, Bermuda is me?’ Well let’s start living it. Let’s make 2012 a year of revival. Let us build one another together.”Opposition Leader of the One Bermuda Alliance, Craig Cannonier said: “My resolution for the New Year is to keep the conversation positive and moving toward solutions that create jobs, stop the shootings and give students the education they need to succeed. My wish is for Bermudians to come closer together as one people. We have so much potential, so much character.”After just a few months as OBA Leader, Mr Cannonier added: “We need to set aside the cynicism and disparagements - they get us nowhere - for more positive ways of thinking and acting. Why not? We have nothing to lose and a world of understanding and unity to gain.” His OBA colleague Shawn Crockwell said: “My wish for 2012 is that we all experience good health, find the strength and wisdom to make it through these difficult economic times and show our individual and collective compassion to those in need.”Former United Bermuda Party Leader Kim Swan said: “My wish for 2012 is for my family to enjoy good health and happiness and for the people of our beloved Bermuda to find the will to search our hearts for the love to come together and realise our true potential as Bermudians.”Minister of Government Estates and Information Services, Michael Scott said his resolution for 2012 is: “To help to build up Bermuda’s economy and to help build up our people in their time of need wherever I encounter their legitimate need.”PLP MP for Warwick North East, Dale Butler said: “We all want peace, love and happiness. I wish for housing for the homeless and jobs for the unemployed.”PLP MP for Pembroke South East Ashfield DeVent said: “2012 was a very difficult and trying year for me having lost both my father and only sister to cancer within a matter of weeks. So from a personal perspective, I am looking forward to a brighter New Year as my family and I continue to heal and move on. I have already made a commitment and start at working on improving my fitness level and health in the upcoming year.”From the political perspective Mr DeVent said: “For the country I will continue to call for us to be more open and honest with regard to the uncomfortable issues such as race, illegal drugs and associated violence we too often fail to address. The first step to fixing any problem is to openly acknowledge and admit that there is a problem.”He added: “I hope that every individual in the country will take time to have an introspective look at the man or woman in the mirror and determine what role they can play in helping the country advance in a positive way. Ask the question ‘am I part of the solution or am I the problem?’ and adjust their behaviour accordingly for the good of the whole.”
