Dunne full of praise for young riders

Bermuda’s cycling contingent have returned home with their heads held high after completing the 2011 Tour of the Battenkill in Cambridge, New York over the weekend. The junior select national cycling team, along with teams from Team Madison and Bicycle Works made the trek to the east coast to compete in the 64-mile race. The trio of Dominique Mayho, Tre-shun Correia, and Vashon Cann competed against more than 100 junior riders in the 17-18 age group, while Mark Godfrey participated in the 15-16 age group.Mayho finished the race in 42nd place, followed by Correia (55), and Cann (57).The weekend didn’t go without incident for the youngsters, with Correia suffering a flat tyre, and Cann having to ride most of the race injured after he was involved in a crash.“The guys had a great race yesterday and it looks like they met our goals, both performance and race development,” said Bermuda Bicycle Association(BBA) president Peter Dunne.“Dominique Mayho was our top finisher in 42nd place and was followed by Tre-shun Correia and Vashon Cann. Mark Godfrey was 31st in the 15-16 category.“We were looking for them to demonstrate that they can race that distance and gain experience in a very large field. While we experienced one flat tyre (Correia) and one crash (Cann), all of the boys completed the 64-mile race, even Cann who went from the finish line to the medical tent for treatment.“The fact that he rode for almost 90 minutes after a major crash on a dirt road section shows his determination to finish, even under very challenging circumstances.”Sarah Bonnett from Team Madison had an excellent race, finishing 23rd in the Women’s Category III division, while Brian Drea finished 36th in the Men’s Category III-Grey category. Neil Lupsic came in 47th.Phil Trussell and Greg Reid both suffered punctures around the half way mark and finished further down the field.Bicycle Works also had a good outing, with Chris Harkness (39th) and Spike Tomlinson (43rd) leading their charge in the Men’s Category IV-Orange.
