Crash ends Mitchell’s Island Games hopes
Female Sinclair Packwood Memorial race winner Nicole Mitchell is out of the Island Games after breaking her collarbone and shoulder blade in a horror crash this weekend.Mitchell suffered the injuries during the third stage of the Killington Stage Race in Vermont, and is now in a race against time to be fit for the Caribbean Cycling Championships later this year. The loss of one of the Island’s in-form cyclists is a big blow to Bermuda’s Island Games hopes, and the Bermuda Bicycle Association are now racing to find a suitable replacement for the Isle of Wight competition which begins in little more than two weeks time.“Nicole’s crash is very unfortunate as she was scheduled to be racing at Island Games in Isle of Wight at the end of June along with Darren Glasford, Dominique Mayho, Tre-shun Correia and Neil de Ste Croix,” said Bermuda Bicycle Association president Peter Dunne.“I have not heard any of the details of her injuries but a broken collarbone will definitely set her back. The results posted from the first two stages of the Killington Stage Race where Nicole was participating suggest that she was riding well at that event.”Mitchell completed the –37-mile first leg of the weekend’s race in one hour, 42 minutes, and 45 seconds, which was good enough for a tie at the top of the leaderboard.A good 11-mile second leg of 7:58.01, left her sixth before a crash that left her stranded in hospital in Vermont, where she will remain until doctors decide she is fit enough to fly home. The champion had been training for the Island Games that she will now miss, while also preparing for the Caribbean Championships later this year. While Dunne is hopeful that Mitchell will be fit for the Championships in Jamaica in Spetember, he is also trying to arrange clearance for one of the other top female riders, such as Karen Bordage or Andrea Proctor who Mitchell beat on May 24, to compete in the event.“It is likely that she (Mitchell) would have recovered from her injuries by then,” said Dunne.“When she is back we will sit down with her and see what the prognosis is for a quick recovery and depending on her willingness she can resume training as soon as the doctors give her the go ahead.”
