Somerset Primary, home of the Bees, had its second annual Math Jeopardy Competition on February 9. Math Jeopardy is an exciting game based on the TV show “Jeopardy”. Representatives from each house and year level showed off their knowledge of mathematics. This day was Dr Kenneth E. Robinson Day. As he was an important educator in Bermuda, we celebrated him with our knowledge of mathematics.There were three rounds for each year level. Yes, even the Primary One students were up there on the stage. Two students per class, from opposing houses, selected- in turn- from categories. The categories were: Mental Math, Vocabulary, Numbers and the Number System, Organizing Shape and Space, and Using Data.We had some special guests for the event; they included the Minister of Education, Dame Jennifer Smith, who also served as our game-show host; Michael Scott, Minister of Estates and Information Services; and Permanent Secretary for Education, Mr Warren Jones. The Reverend Howard Dill and Somerset Primary Trustee, Mr John Orridge, were joined by Dr Lou Matthews, Director of Education Standards Accountability in the Ministry of Education and Dr Freddie Evans, Assistant Director Education Standards Accountability. Some school principals came too, even from the far end of the island.Our head prefects did an outstanding job with the official welcome and formal greetings; but that’s not all! We also had some students give presentations about Dr K.E. Robinson, and how our school Houses got their names. Did you know that our school used to be called Sandys Grammar School? Then it was combined with Boaz Island School, and the name was changed to Somerset Primary School. The two new houses were named after people important to both schools, Finlay/Patterson and Gilbert/Richards.The game was fun and educational. The scores were close, but in the end, Gilbert/Richards, and those wearing green and gold, came up on top.
