Despite the weather over the last few days, Bermuda is likely to avoid a grey Christmas this year.

According to the Bermuda Weather Service, the rain and winds that have dampened the Island since Saturday will leave the Island by Friday.

A spokeswoman for the service said yesterday: "On Thursday we're looking at a weak cold front, which could make folks a little nervous, but we expect Friday to be mostly dry, with a slight chance of a few showers in the morning."

Last Saturday, the Island was battered with rain and hurricane force winds brought by a 'thermal trough' of cold air.

Gusts at Commissioners Point were recorded as reaching 70 knots late on Saturday afternoon, while 65 knots is considered hurricane strength.

The conditions also formed a tornado in Hamilton on Saturday, damaging several buildings including Magistrates' Court. The Weather Service recorded just under an inch of rain on that day alone.

"The low pressure that caused the storms has passed to our west," the spokeswoman said. "It was reluctant to leave, but it's going."

And while winter storms have hammered both Europe and the East Coast of the United States, Airport general manager Aaron Adderley said that no flight delays or cancellations are expected.

"The weather affected flights over the weekend, but we've had no adverse impact today," he said. "Everything is business as usual."
