Let's have a website to give updates on closures to the Causeway during stormy weather – MP

Idea: Donte Hunt at the Causeway, which is part of his St George's South constituency. He would like to see Government set up a website so that residents could check for updates on the status of closures of the Causeway during storms.

Hurricane season is here and St. George's South MP Donte Hunt is urging Government to create a website to better inform the public about the Causeway's closure.

This year Bermuda's only access to the L.F. Wade International Airport, St. George's and St. David's was closed three times for winter storms. In 2008 and 2009 it was closed only once and in the Senate this month Public Safety Minister David Burch said the decision to close the bridge was not taken lightly.

Mr. Hunt, who is the MP for the Causeway area, said he understood the decision was taken to ensure the safety of everyone, but thought the information could be advertised better.

He said: "My real issue is, for instance, in the last real storm they closed the bridge and no one knew about it. At my restaurant I have a guy who lives in St. David's. He would have had to stay at my place or found somewhere to stay. My suggestion was to not only disseminate the information to the public on regular basis but also to have a website.

"We need somewhere people can go for the information. Some people might not be listening to the radio, (when his worker was trying to figure out if he needed to go home) I went on the Police website, the Government website and I couldn't find any information about whether it would close or not.

"They could also put on there information about wind speed and the different conditions at the Causeway.

"It's important to ensure the safety of the bridge, but there needs to be an effort to disseminate the information on when and how the bridge will be open."

Mr. Hunt believes the website could also be used to ensure the buy-in of the public for the new bridge that is set to be built. And he added while it's not life threatening, people have wanted to use their boats to go through the bridge but haven't been able to."

In March in the House of Assembly Minister of Works and Engineering, Derrick Burgess gave an update on the new bridge project. He said the Government was awaiting a final feasibility report on the New Crossing Project and reiterated the Government's commitment to a Private-Public Partnership.

Plans for a new airport were also recently released by the Airport Operations Manager Aaron Adderley and the Minister of Tourism and Transport, Premier Ewart Brown. They included designs that would contrast the waves and let in the sunlight that bathes the Island.

Mr. Adderley said the new designs for the ageing airport, parts of which were built in the 1940s, would cost somewhere between $300 million and $400 million. However, Mr. Adderley and the Premier admitted that in the current economic climate the Island's need for a new hospital would take precedence.

Yesterday Mr. Hunt said he agreed with this outlook, adding that with a Government that was more than $1 billion in debt it was not the time. "I think there are some things they can do to renovate the airport to make it more attractive. Going upstairs it's pretty nice. But when we have a budget that's $1 billion in debt it's not needed."
