Letters to the Editor, December 9, 2002

This letter is directed to the talk show of Everest DaCosta . We are tired of listening to the same people every day. The same old talk, it's boring to everyone. We have heard what they say over and over again, they also do not have a time limit and they also are allowed to come back on the same show to argue a point. David Lopes does not have that. He says time's up and no repeat calls and also has some bright callers. Give us a break of course I could turn it off but I keep hoping some one would come on that does not have a bias report.

Dear Sir,

Dear Sir,

Who was the genius who decided to pave certain corners and roads outside of school entrances with a substance that turns that particular stretch of road into an ice-rink for bikes?

I have nearly been killed twice in the past two days at the newly paved corner on Harbour Road beside the exit from the Dinghy Club. A co-worker witnessed an accident on the same corner last night and this morning I noted a police officer taking a statement from an individual who was obviously involved in an accident there this morning.

This surface is supposed to be non-slip. It doesn't work. It does the opposite of its intended purpose and poses a threat to the safety of those on bikes.

Dear Sir,

We are writing to express our concern and amazement in reference to the controversy over the claimed non-auditing of the Auditor General, Mr. Larry Dennis.

When is the Government ever going to learn that they cannot scheme and use tactics to misguide the people of Bermuda. Don't Bermudians realise that they have now switched the focus from the BHC scandal to the Berkeley Project by scandalising Mr. Dennis' good, honest name. How dare they... Mr. Dennis is a man whose integrity has been questioned. This Government will use anything they can to cover their mistakes. The focus has been shifted; just remember this when you cast your vote.

As long as we have known Mr. Dennis he has always been the most pleasant person. We feel that this bickering has to stop and that the Government should get on with it. Mr. Dennis is doing his job; too bad they're not doing theirs.

We are totally fed up with all the accusations and innuendos being cast within the political arena, and no Mr. Dennis does not have to explain anything to them or us. We must learn to trust people. Obviously this Government does not trust anyone who is white. We take exception to that. We are also hard-working, honest people who pay taxes. We are part of this community and when we see this type of injustice pointed towards a person who is only doing a job and to the best of his ability, we take exception to the remarks this Government has made.

Mr. Dennis deserves an apology. Do the right thing PLP and Derrick Burgess. Set the record straight and get on with it.

MD AND THE GIRLS FROM PEMBROKE

Dear Sir,

Some of your older readers may remember the days when there was a triangle in the middle of the road junction where Berry Hill Road met Tee Street. After several accidents and many more near misses, it was removed 30-odd years ago, and we were left with a simple T-junction which made life much simpler for the passing motorist.

There are at least three junctions which, in my humble opinion, would benefit from similar “cosmetic surgery”. They are:-

1) The junction of Paynter's Road and Harrington Sound Road:

2) The junction of Black Watch Pass and North Shore Road, which is further complicated by the close proximity of the Langton Hill junction: and

3) The junction of Serpentine Road and Pitts Bay Road, since the lovely tree that used to be there is now nothing but three garishly painted stumps.

And, while we're on the subject of road junctions, when W&E were re-doing the junction of North Shore Road, Blue Hole Hill and Wilkinson Avenue a few years back, why on earth didn't they simply make that a roundabout?

And, on the subject of “places where roundabouts ought to be but aren't”, I think the all-time classic example of THAT is the junction of Frog Lane and Gymnasium Road, presently controlled by traffic lights. As a matter of interest, has anybody else noticed that those lights always seem to stop the moving line of traffic and give precedence to the stationary line of traffic?

Check it out next time you're passing that way, if you're unfortunate enough to have to do so. Personally, I'm a great believer in roundabouts to control traffic: they're basic to negotiate (“give way to traffic coming from your right”), they need no maintenance (apart from the grass cut occasionally), and they never break down!
