A documentary about the US war on drugs and an historical drama on a love triangle involving the 18th century Queen of Denmark, will screen this weekend.The Bermuda Documentary Film Festival will show ‘The House I Live In’ at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute on Sunday at 3pm.The film took home the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and poses questions on why more than $1 trillion has been spent on drug arrests since the 1970s and yet there are more cheap drugs than ever before.Festival organiser Duncan Hall said the film is “comprehensive in scope and heart-wrenching in its humanity”. Directed by Eugene Jarecki, it “grabs viewers and shakes them to their core”, he said.“‘The House I Live In’ is not only the definitive film on the failure of the US drug war, it is also a masterpiece filled with hope and the potential to effect change.“Over 40 years, the war on drugs has accounted for more than 45 million arrests, made America the world’s largest jailer, and damaged poor communities at home and abroad. Yet for all that, drugs are cheaper, purer, and more available today than ever before.“Filmed in more than 20 states, ‘The House I Live In’ captures heart-wrenching stories from individuals at all levels of America’s war on drugs.”Also on offer at this weekend’s screening is ‘A Royal Affair’, showing at 5.15pm.Nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category, this 18th century historical drama took four years to produce.It was directed by Nikolaj Arcel, the screenwriter of ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’, and is described as an epic romance about the love triangle between a German doctor, the queen of Denmark, and her deranged king.Mr Hall said: “‘A Royal Affair’ is the true story of an ordinary man who wins the queen’s heart and starts a revolution.“Centring on the intriguing love triangle between the ever more insane Danish King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard), the royal physician who is a man of enlightenment and idealism Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen) and the young but strong Queen Caroline Mathilda (Alicia Vikander), ‘A Royal Affair’ is the gripping tale of brave idealists who risk everything in their pursuit of freedom for their people.“Above all it is the story of a passionate and forbidden romance that changed an entire nation.”The film series, sponsored by Gosling’s, is a joint production of Bermuda Documentary Film Festival and the BUEI.Tickets are on sale now at the Oceans Gift Shop at the BUEI, or by calling 297-7314.
