Village retain hope of reeling in leaders
Ralph Bean Jr, the North Village Rams coach, believes his side still have an outside chance of winning the Premier Division despite the gap at the top.
The Rams head into tomorrow’s game against Southampton Rangers at Bernard Park within touching distance of Dandy Town, the league leaders.
Town sit at the summit on 22 points, above Somerset Trojans on goal difference, with Village, four points adrift heading into the weekend.
Village won the first league encounter between the two sides 3-2 at Southampton Oval.
Knowing the onus is on his side to do their job before looking at other results, Bean is leaning on his faith in the side’s ability to find consistency in the run-in.
“We haven’t been consistent throughout the season but we are still in the title race,” Bean said. “The objective was to be in the race heading into the final stretch, and we are in it but there is still a lot of work to be done.
“The league title hasn’t been at Bernard Park since 2006, that’s something we are trying to rectify this year.
“Any time is the right time to pick up the pace in terms of getting results, this is one of the most unpredictable seasons in a long time. “It will be interesting to see how the final few matches shape up the league.”
The former Bermuda striker also pointed at the club’s history of being a second-half team and added that they are capable of hauling in the two sides above them.
“Traditionally, we have been a second half team and the gap is only four points.
“You can say that the loss to Dandy Town is what separates us from being right in the mix, but the side are confident we can overhaul the leaders.
“When you get results you don’t need to worry about what is happening around you. In our situation, we have to look at other results while also getting maximum points.
“You can say that this game is a win and that one is a tough one, but there is always one game that you don’t expect to lose and it will set you back.
“The run-in will be a tough one but if we win out and a few results fall our way, we will be there at the end.”
Elsewhere in Premier Division action, champions Devonshire Cougars travel to St David’s to take on the Islanders in a must-win match for the club. They are on 17 points.
PHC host Flanagan’s Onions at Southampton Oval, while Town go to Wellington Oval to play Hamilton Parish.
In the First Division, BAA Wanderers host Somerset Eagles at Goose Gosling Field tonight. St George’s will look to build on Thursday’s victory over X-Roads in their Cup replay when they host Ireland Island Rangers at Wellington Oval.
X-Roads play Robin Hood at Garrison Field and Young Men’s Social Club do battle with Boulevard at Bernard Park. The remaining fixture pits Devonshire Colts against Paget at Police Field.
