The public have their say on the Budget

Photo by Glenn TuckerSpeaking out: Premier Paula Cox addresses the media during a press conference held at the Cabinet Building about the Budget.

Whether they were posted on our website stories, our Facebook pages, or our Follow It Live site, as we reported live on the Budget we were inundated with comments yesterday. In their own words, here is a sample of some of those comments.Congratulations, Madam Premier on a budget that should make a difference, to the Bermuda economy. Thank you Madam Premier for shifting the Cabinet around, but, one thing I would like to see, is Dame Jennifer Smith becoming Deputy Premier, because I believe you both have Bermuda’s best interest at heart. I believe with the two of you leading Bermuda you will clean up the mess PLP have gotten themselves into. Madam Premier, purchase a cat and that will control the rat situation..... Raymond Moses Santucci England formerly of BermudaGuess you really can’t please everyone, Mrs Premier. It is so sad that when you read the comments and listen to the talk shows, it’s the same old people who have been criticising the PLP since the they were defeated way back when. What they fail to realise is we are ALL in this together. If we float, we float together, if we sink, we sink together. This has nothing to do with race or party affiliation. It’s funny that these same complainers, had us enslaved, stole our land, gave us the worst jobs with the worst pay when they were in power and did nothing for the average Bermudian, all while building their multiple homes, guest houses and lining their pockets. All you had to do was walk along Front Street and Tucker’s Town and Fairylands. Lets not be blinded by your BS and lies when you saw an opportunity in international business as a way to further fatten your bank accounts in the 80s and 90s. It was YOU who paid no attention to the core of Bermuda’s foundation, Tourism back then, and we been trying to fix it every since. So either offer some realistic solutions, or shut the H*** up.On the pre-Budget statement issued by the Premier yesterday morning: This PR statement is a reflection of the prevalent atmosphere of attempting to spin doctor the past, all be it, she is being far more subtle than her predecessor. I do not envy her current predicament, with the way the global economies are washing onto our shores, however whatever sympathy she garners from me about this is negated by attempts to deflect her responsibility, as Finance Minister for the last eight years. It has been under her, as the Finance Minister, and her unwillingness in the past to take a stand against the horrendous Government overspending and financial mismanagement, that all Bermudians now find themselves burdened with a tremendous debt that will be saddled to our children.Ms Cox knows that without a robust international business Bermuda is gonna go down the sewer, so she went for the lower payroll tax. Bravo! We will still have a deficit hole and that’s a problem but at least the Premier has taken the right turn. I see people with a chip on their shoulder here (that’s you “it’s me”!), so let me remind you that “the core of Bermuda’s foundation” is both black and white since both races have built this Island. On cuts to social programmes: This is sad especially for the Mirrors programme, they should have more programmes for young people and they should also have more programmes for graduates who come back to Bermuda there should be no cuts where that is concerned. So our Government will just go back to the House and because they have a large majority they will just up the statutory debt ceiling to perhaps $3 Billion as ... business as usual. On payroll tax: Surprised! But great news! ... Wow two percent ... Hey two percent less is better than two percent more, I’ll take that any day.Yay! “Payroll tax rollbacks”Do they really believe we have five percent unemployment what about the lost jobs in exempt companies that don’t get counted as the job is gone and so is the worker the economy is suffering much worse than the five percent suggests. We’ve been thrown a morsel ( payroll tax rollback). What will be the real effect on the working person. No real information on anything else.Kind of feel like I’ve eaten a huge cloud of cotton candy.... I know I ate something, but I sure don’t feel full.... and I’ve getting cavities!Premier feels that taxpayers will have a spending power of $50M due to reduction in payroll tax has she not considered the increase in health insurance in April and inflation? Particularly on those jobs that have had a feeze in salary? Does she truly believe that taxpayers will spend that entire $50m?Garbage collection as part of a Budget press conference! This is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.Bermuda Government is over bloated. We the taxpayers pay for people who do nothing productive. Do we really need 5,000+ people managing the affairs of 50,000 people? Sounds like vote getting to me.What did you all expect, a balanced budget? That rarely happens, especially in such a bad economy. Madame Cox should have gone further and cut more taxes to stimulate the economy. In addition, All MPs should have had they salaries cut by five percent and the public sector by one percent as an example to the Country. Imagine the savings. It is very easy to blame the Government and the expat workers for all the woes but as we have seen from the recent bus strike that very few people are willing to act responsible. The world, not just Bermuda, is in a recession. Like the rest of the world, that too will pass and the strong and the responsible will reach the summit. Let’s hope that Bermudians can be STRONG & RESPONSIBLE during this period. For once I want to hear less complaints of what has not been done by Government. By saying this yes they have a responsibility for our economy. We have to take responsibility for the state we are in as well as we have been spending well above our means for too long. Giving our children every name brand item in the book. making sure they have the top of the line cell phones. Not showing our children value for money. Only now are we getting the message that we need to hold on to our money because people are losing jobs. Bermudians let’s learn from this hard lesson and never put ourselves in this position again. When the economy rebounds hold on to your money. Invest or save it for a rainy day.To join our Facebook Fans page go to: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Royal-Gazette/249363077854?v=wall
