Zebras ease to win over hapless Hood
PHC 3 Robin Hood 1PHC Zebras breezed to a comfortable victory over a Robin Hood side still without a point this season at Southampton Oval yesterday.Zebras followed up last weekend’s impressive win against defending champions Dandy Town with another assured performance against Hood who remain bottom of the Digicel Premier Division.Justin Bean set the tone for Zebras, who outplayed and outworked Kyle Lightbourne’s Hood, when his tame shot from just inside the area somehow trickled its way past goalkeeper Juan Manuel Federico.PHC should have added a second when the impressive Shakir Smith drew Federico off his line before squaring a pass into the path of Rakeem DeShields who fired wide with the goal at his mercy.DeShields thought he had put his side two goals up when he drilled home an effort past Juan Manuel Federico but the goal was disallowed for offside.Hood, who lost the services of striker Freddy Mascarenhas early on through an ankle injury, improved briefly after the break with Dunte Albouy heading just wide of the mark.Moments later Hood’s Mikre Place thought he’d won his side a penalty after being fouled by Kenji Griffith but referee Lyndon Raynor adjudged the late challenge to have been made outside the box.PHC were soon back in the ascendancy with Griffith’s long ball from deep finding wide man Smith who cut inside his marker with ease before drilling a low shot into the far corner.Substitute Donnie Bascome then made it three when he was afforded too much time and space in the box to slide home a cross from Smith past the outstretched Federico.Hood did manage to reduce the deficit late on when Pace found room on the edge of the box before stroking the ball home.Smith, who was PHC’s most dangerous player, praised his side’s superior fitness levels before insisting that Zebras could challenge for the title this season.“I thought we played Robin Hood’s style of football today rather than our own, in a way, but we were deserving of the victory,” he said.“Our fitness was key today because not only did we outplay (Hood) we outran them. It’s another good win for us and I think we’re definitely improving after finding our feet following a slow start to the season.“We believe if can maintain our current form then we can challenge for the title this season.”Zebras’ win lifts them to second in the Premier Division table, three points behind surprise early pacesetters Flanagan’s Onions.Southampton Rangers beat St George’s 3-2 at the Wellington Oval yesterday.PHC: T Place, M Simmons, R Richardson, M Lambe, K Griffith, J Sealey, M Piper, R DeShields (D Bascome, 78), S Smith, K Lambe (J Simmons, 78), J Dean (A Grant, 65)Substitutes not used: R Glasford, A Grant, S Boyles-SimonsGoals: Bean, 13, Smith, 65.
