Squash pair miss out on medal after narrow loss
Nick Kyme and James Stout were denied a bronze medal in the CAC Games squash doubles yesterday, losing in three tight games to the number one seeds from Colombia.
In a fierce battle which lasted for well over an hour in front of some 400 screaming Colombians, the Bermudian duo won the opener 15-12, before a couple of extremely close refereeing decisions in the second handed the opposition the game 15-13.
The third and final game was again tight and exhausting, with some rallies lasting for several minutes as both sets of players tried desperately to keep the ball in play on the bouncy court and not make any unforced errors.
But with the score at 10-all, the Colombians clicked into another gear at the crucial time, taking it 15-10.
?Playing the number one seeds in the doubles was always going to be really tough,? said chef de mission Kris Hedges from Cartagena, Colombia last night.
?But both Nick and James did extremely well and the match could have gone either way. There were one or two very tight calls from the referee which on another day might have gone in their favour.
?Overall though to take the Colombians that close, particularly in front of such a partisan crowd, was a fantastic effort and they deserve a lot of credit.?
With the singles and doubles competitions now over for the Bermudian team of world number 72 Kyme, Stout, Michael Shrubb and Mel Caines, attention now turns to the team competition next week.
Elsewhere, diver Katura Horton-Perinchief competes in the three metre springboard this afternoon after placing eighth in the one metre event earlier this week.
Athletes Michael Donawa and Akila King arrive in South America tomorrow, while cyclist Geri Mewett will compete in the road race on Saturday.
