Rolling Road snatch early Pro-Am lead
round of the 22nd annual Lobster Pot Invitational Golf Championships yesterday.
Twenty-eight US clubs, representing 112 golfers, challenged Castle Harbour and when the final putt had dropped, Rolling Road Golf Club, of Catonsville, Maryland, enjoyed the opening-day lead.
However, at least 12 competitors missed yesterday's first round as they were among hundreds who fell ill after a water contamination problem at the Castle Harbour Marriott hotel (see page one story).
Tournament director John Mason said, however, he expected all of the teams to be back to full strength today.
Professional Billy Bassler teamed up with Bill Stear, John Gaino and Jeff Morsberger as Rolling Road fired a 19-under-par 123 to lead Huntington, of Huntington, New York, by five shots in the net competition.
Woburn Golf Club, headed by Belmont Invitational champion Paul Parajeckas, were third on 129. Among those teamed up with Parajeckas was Fritz Reiter, the local restaurateur who sponsors the tournament. Defending champions Meadow Brook were 12 shots back.
Huntington's team of pro Jim Smoot, John Howell, Bob Templeton and Louis Boccia topped the gross standings with 139, one up on Rolling Road and two ahead of Camelback Golf Club.
Four of the teams in the best-two-ball event equalled or bettered par of 142.
The second round is scheduled today.
